DEVICE FOR HOLDING PLOWSHARES OR LAYS.
SEECXFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 531,806, dated January '.l, 1895.
Application filed March 27, 1894. Serial No. 505,250. (No model.)
.To all whom t may con/cern:
Beit known that I, EVERY TE PASKE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Orange City, in the county of Sioux and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Holding and Preventing the VVa-rping of Plowshares or Lays; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art -to which it appertains to make and use the saine.
The object of the present invention is the provision of a device for holding and preventing the warping of plow shares or lays during the process of sharpening and drawing.
Heretot'ore great difficulty has been experienced in again fitting plow shares to the plow stock after being sharpened owing to warping occasioned by the heating and cooling process. The present invention aims to overcome this difficulty by providing a combined holder and clamp of such construction as to obviate any warping of the plow share or lay during the sharpening process.
The improvement consists of the novel construction of tool or holder hereinafter more fully described and claimed and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View -showing a plow share or lay in position to be operated upon. Fig. 2 is a cross section on the line X X of Fig. l looking in the direction of the arrow.
The holder or clamp is composed of a base 2 having a flange portion 3 projected at substantially right angles from one edge thereof. This flange or wing 3 extends the full length of the base 2, and tapers or curves slightly at the ends to the plane of the base. An ear or wing d projects from the opposite edge of the base 2 and extends parallel with the lange or wing 3 and has a slot 5 to receive a sliding nut 6 flanged at its inner end to project beyond the walls of the slot 5 to retain the said nut in place against the tension of the binding screw 8 which is mounted in the said sliding nut 6. The wing 4 is about one- Vthird ot' the length of the base 2, and is centrally disposed, and forms a support for the sliding nut 6 and the binding screw S. The base and iiange are reinforced at the angle opposite the wing e by an enlargement or augle iron 9 to strengthen the same against the tension of the binding screw 8 when the latter is turned up tight against the plow share or part to be secured while sharpening. A handle l0 of approximately an arch shape is secured at its ends to the base and is provided to be grasped by the hand when manipulating the device during the sharpening process.
The operation of the invention is as follows: The plow share or lay 11 to be sharpened is placed with its inner edge against the base 2, and with its lower face against the tiange or wing 3. The binding screw 8 is turned until the share is clamped between the wing 3 andthe inner end of the said binding screw 2. The share is heated, hammered and sharpened in the usual manner. The inner edge portion being securely clamped in the manner set forth, warping thereof cannot possibly occur during the heating and cooling of the share and during the drawing thereof in the process of sharpening. The nut 6 is made adjustable in the wing 4 to adapt the device to plow shares and lays of different sizes so that the binding screw may be positioned midway between the ends of the said share and enter the middle opening.
In the preferable forni of construction the parts 2, 3, 4; and 9 will be integrally cast, but it is obvious that they may be separately formed and secured together in any desired manner.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- In a device for preventing the warping of plow shares 0r lays during sharpening and drawing the same, the combination of a holder or clamp having a base with a iiange projecting from the lower portion thereof, and also provided with an ear wing at the upper portion thereof, with a slot therein, a sliding nut mounted in the said slot, having a binding screw, and a handle attached at its ends to the
