UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT R. GILLIS, OF KINSMAN, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN COW-FETTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 196,008, dated October 9, 1877; application filed March 17, 1877.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, ALBERT B. GILLis, of Kinsman, in the county of Trumbull and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cow-Fetters and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved cowfetter.
The object of this invention is to provide a durable cow-fetter of few parts, and simple in construction, and adapted to be secured to the leg of a cow by means of adjustable clamps, the same adapted to be secured without the aid of straps, which latter are soon destroyed by exposure to the weather.
In the drawings, Figure l represents the fetter applied to the leg of a cow. Fig. 2 is a section taken through line a a, Fig. 1.
The invention consists of a fetter-bar having a clamp combined therewith in such a manner that the fetter-bar may be readily secured to the leg of a cow by means of the adjustable clamp.
A designates a fetter bar, provided with hooks a, a', which latter fit against the forward part of the leg of the cow, above and below the hough. The bar A has an arm, B, projecting approximately at right angles from near its middle portion, said arm having a slot, F, to guide the sliding piece C. The arm B increases in thickness toward its free end, the upper portion of par-t B being grooved to permit the piece C to have a rotary movement imparted thereto when the fetter is to be adjusted and secured in place. The piece Gis grooved at d d', in order that it may be partially rotated in the slotted arm B, and also said piece C is provided with two hooks, c c', of the proper shape to iit over the hough. The shank D of piece C has an eye, a', to receive the key E, which serves to clamp the sliding piece C in any position on the arm B.
In applying the device the bar A is placed in position and the piece O slid on the arm B till it embraces the hough, in which position it is clamped by the key E.
The several parts of the fetter are, preferably, made of malleable iron.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination, with a fetter-bar, of a clamp, adj ustably secured thereto, substantjally as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with a fetter-bar, of a sliding clamp, and means for locking the two together, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination, with a fetter-bar, of a rigid clamp, adjustably secured thereto, said clamp being constructed and arranged to have a partial rotary movement with respect to said bar, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 2d day of March, 1877.
ALBERT It. GILLIS.
