SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 277,676, dated May 15, 1883.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AMOS BURSON, of East Palestine, in the county of Golumbiana, and in the State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Devices for Horses; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure l is a perspective view of my apparatus as applied to the pole of a carriage, and Fig. 2 is a like view ofthe same enlarged and separated from said pole.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
The design of my invention is to permit of the adjustment of the point of connection with the pole or shaft of a carriage of a safety-bar that extends between and is attached to the bit of a horse; and-to this end said invention consists, principally,-in combining with the rear end of the safety-bar a pivotal connection, which is adapted to be moved lengthwise of and secured upon the pole or shaft, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.
It consists, further, in a pivotal adjustable bearing for the rear end of the safety-bar, which is capable of contraction or expansion to adapt it to poles or shafts that have different diameters, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter shown.
It consists, finally, in the construction and combination of the parts of the clip-bearing, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter set forth.
In the annexed drawings, A represents the pole of a carriage, to which, at a point midway between its ends, is pivoted one end of a bar, 13, which bar extends from thence forward and upward to the bit 0 of the horse and has its front end connected therewith.
The device described is intended for use with vicious horses, and effectually prevents them from kicking; butin order that it may be easily placed in position and changed to adapt it to different horses it is necessary that its rear pivotal bearin g should be adjustable. To effect such object the bearing is composed of a plate, D, that rests upon the upper side of the pole A, and a strap, d, which encircles the lower side of said pole, and is provided within each end with two or more openings, d, by which such end may he passed over and caused to engage with a stud, d, that projects from the corresponding end of said plate D, such arrangement enabling the space inclosed by said plate and strap to be varied at will to adapt the device to poles having different diameters. The plate D is provided with an eye, 01 for engagement by a hook, 11, upon the rear end of the bar B, and within the lower side of the strap cl is a set-screw, d, which may be turned upward and caused 'to impinge upon the lower side of the pole A for the purpose of locking the hearing in place.
The device described is used as follows, viz: The front end of the bar B is connected with the bridle of the horse, and to its rear end is connected the eye d of the plate D, after which said plate is placed upon the pole A, the strap 61 is placed around the lower part of the latter and its ends hooked upon the studs, and the entire bearing is then moved lengthwise of said pole and secured in position by means of the set-screw at.
As constructed, the device described is easily and quickly adapted to and secured upon any ordinary pole or shaft, and may be readily adjusted to and fastened in such position lengthwise of the same as to render most efficient the operation of the safety-bar.
Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim as new 1s- 1. In combination with the rear end of the safety-bar, a pivotal connection which is adapted to be moved lengthwise of and secured upon the pole or shaft, substantially as and for the.
