Mill P No. 242,420. Patented May 31,188I.
UNITED STATES I PATENT OFFICE.
ADOLPH UASPAR, OF MASGOUTAH, ILLINOIS.
MILL-PICK HANDLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 242,420, dated May 31, 1881.
Application filed October I, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADOLPH OASPAR, of Mascoutah, St. Clair count-y, Illinois, have invented a new and Improved M ill-Pick Handle, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a handle adjustable to mill-picks of any taper.
The invention relates to a mill-pick handle having a mortise made through its head to receive thepick. One side of the niortiseis made concave, and a movable flat-faced convexbacked key is arranged within the concavity of the mortise in such amanner that when the pick is introduced into the mortise the keywill move against the pick and firmly hold the same within the mortise. The pick is at once released from the handle by tapping the head of the pick on some objert.
This invention forms a very effective and durable pick-handle, whereby the pick may be secured'and quickly fastened or detached from the handle.
Figure l is a perspective view of the handle with a mill-pick in position. Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal section of the same, and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal eleva ion of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts.
In the drawings, A represents the handle, having an elongated rectangular head, A, provided with a mortise or socket, a, extending from side to side through it, which mortise or socket a has a depression, I), in its concave bottom. The bottom of this mortise a is covered with an iron plate, B, in which is a slot, 0, immediately over the depression I), and the ends of this plate B are turned down the sides of the head A, and secured thereto by screws d d or other suitable device.
Ois the segmental key, held in position with- (No model.)
in the mortise a by means of a screw, f, or other suitable device, that projects from the center of the convex face of said key 0 down through the slot 0 of the plate B, the depression 1) affording space for the free movement of said screwf. The upper face of said key 0 is straight, and its ends are preferably slightly blunted, that they may endure longer.
In case it should be desired to remove the key for the purpose of in erting either a larger or a smaller one, or for the purpose of repairs, it is only necessary to remove the screws d, and then the plate and key can be removed together.
I) D are bolts passing transversely through the head A, to add to its strength.
The k y 0, it will beseen, will slide and ad- I just itself to a pick of any taper, its movement being limited only by the length of the slot 0 in the plate B;
E represents a tapering pick, inserted in the mortise a and keyed fast by the key 0, which is applied to the pick E in such a manner that said pick E is tightened in place by use.
I am aware that a handle for mill-picks having an opening through its head and a movable curved wedge placed therein is not new, and this I disclaim. v
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A mill-pick handle, A, provided with the slot or opening a, the removable metallic plate B, provided with the slot 0, the wedge O, and the headed screw or fastening f, which has its head to catch back of the slot and move in the
