W. H. SHARPINGTON. COMBINED PICK AND SHOVEL.
No. 662,926. Patented June 30, 1896" Witmaoeo awto'a SHO UNITED STATES PATENT OEEicE.
IVIL'LIAM HENRY Sl-IARPINGTON, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
COMBINED PICK AND SHOVEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 562,926, dated June 30, 1896.
Application filed December 31 1395. Serial No. 573,951. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that LWILLIAM HENRY SHARP- INGTON, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at 102 Camberwell New Road, London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Pick and Hoe, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved combined pick and shovel; and it has for its object the production. of an implement which combines in itself both a spade or shovel and a pick, and which may be readily used in either capacity, or as a hoe, scraper, or the like.
In order that this invention may be the better understood, reference is made to the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 of the said drawings is a front elevation of the invention for use as a shovel. Fig. 2 is a side View, and shows the shovelblade turned at right angles to the shaft or handles, so that it may be used as a hoe or as a pick, the pick-finger being in position for such use. Fig. 3 is a side view of Fig. 1, and shows the position occupied by the pick when not in use. Fig. a is a view of a bolt which is employed to keep the blade in position.
In carrying this invention into elfect I construct a blade A, of steel or other suitable metal, having instead of the usual socket for attachment to the handle a pick-finger 13, formed continuous therewith, as shown, and having a slot G, formed at about the center to allow of the whole being pivoted to a shank D, carried by the handle'E, as shown at c in Figs. 1, 2, and 3.
The shank D, it will be observed, is oifset from the handle at the upper end, so as to enable the pivotal support of the pick and blade to be carried beyond the plane of the sides of the handle and thus the more readily to be brought to either position or angle for use. The slots or notches cl d are formed, respectively, at points coinciding with lines passing centrally through the pivotal point in horizontal and vertical planes, which construction furnishes a stronger bearing or resistance to the thrust of either the blade or pick and the pivot is relieved of all strain. As a further advantage of my improved construction, it will be seen that the upper edge of the shank D is formed in the are of a circle, of which the pivot e is the center, and as the pick and blade are brought to either position for use the spring-bolt F rides upon this arc-shaped edge, thereby the more readily adapting the parts to position and also taking the strain from the pivot.
The shank D is shaped so as to allow of the blade above mentioned being turned at right angles to the handle, and is slotted at d d to allow the spring-bolt F to engage with the said slots and to retain the blade and with it the finger B in either the vertical or the horizontal position indicated on the drawings at Figs. 1 and 2.
The spring-boltF consists of a round piece of metal having aprojection G, formed thereon, and is fixed immediately below the blade A and passes through the slotted portion of the finger B in such a manner as to engage with the slots d d, formed in the shank D, to which the blade is pivoted. One end of the bolt is provided with a head H and the other is reduced somewhat in size and engages with the spring I, so that upon the slot d coming into line therewith it is acted upon by the said spring and locks the spade in the desired position for use.
When it is necessary to alter the position of the blade, the head H is pressed and causes the bolt to be withdrawn from the slot when the blade may be moved, the spring causing the bolt to return when opposite the next slot.
Instead of the bolt herein described, any suitable locking device may be utilized or a screwed stud may be used if found convenient for holding the blade in the position required.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is- A tool or implement of the character de scribed, the same comprising a handle having a shank oifset therefrom at one side, a combined blade and pick slotted at the intermediate connecting portions to embrace the shank and pivoted to the shank beyond the plane of the sidev of the handle, the said shank being constructed on its upper edge in the are of a circle of which the pivot is the center, and being notched at points-coinciding with horizontal and vertical lines pass ing through the pivot, and a locking-bolt and spring carried by the connecting portion of the blade and pick and moving therewith to engage the notches whenever the tool is adjnsted, substantially as shown and for the purpose set forth. 1o
Signed at London this 17th day of December, 1895.,
WILLIAM HENRY SIIARPING'ION. Witnesses:
