Description

vW. A. GABRIEL.
y TRY'SQUARB. No. 296,157.` Ptenerd Apr. 1,1884.
, a 7L IW] M 4 me a aD/E UNITED; STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM A. GABRIEL, OF BRIDGEPOBT, CONNECTICUT.
`TRY-SQUARE.
To all whom t may concern.- Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. GABRIEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State. .of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Try-Squares; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descriptionof the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
VMy invention relates to certain novel and useful improvements in try-squares, and has for its object to provide such a device as shall be capable of adj ustment, whereby the trueness of the square may always be insured, while at the same time the construction shall be simple and economical; and with these ends in View my invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafterfully and in detail explained, and then specifically designated by the claims.
In order that those skilled in the art to which my invention appertains may more fully understand its construction and operation, I will proceed to describe the same in detail, referring by letter to theV accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- -Figure l is a View illustrating the appearf ance in a completed form of my improvement 5 Fig. 2, `a view with the arm in section, showing the method of adjustment by means of which the blade is brought into the proper position; and Fig. 3, a section taken at the line x x of Fig. 14.
Similar letters denote like parts in theseveral iigures of the drawings. @A is the arm, and B the blade pivoted within said arm, as seen at C, a slight play being allowed for the purpose of the adjustment of SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 296,157, dated April l, 1884. i
applicano nien Augustin, 1ers. (No model.)
ment of the blade may be increased, and this is advantageous when it is not desirable that the latter shall form a right angle with the arm.
I am aware that squares have been made heretofore in which a pivoted blade was adjusted by set-screws, to which access was had by removing the side of the handle. all done away with in my invention.4 The handle or arm is made of a solid piece of metal and set-screws placed at the end, which bear against wires extending through the handle. In my improved construction the set-screws do not come in contact with the blade, and as the wires are not rotated the wear is alllupon the end which does not touch the blade. j The nat ends of the wire only act on the blade, thus giving a delicacy of adjustment not heretofore attained, as well as simplicity of construction, ease of management, and great durability. y
Having thus described my inventiom what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters 1. In a try-square, the blade pivoted within the arm, in combination with the independent wires passed longitudinally through said arm, and set-screws abutting against said wires, substantially as set forth.
2. In a trysquare, the combination of the arm A, wires D, set-screws E, and blade B, pivoted within said arm, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of twowitnesses.
WILLIAM A. GABRIEL. Witnesses:
