Description

' E. MACK.
PLOW LAY HOLDER. APPLICATION TILED NOV. 8. 1908- Patented June 1, 1909.
Wilma:
ERNST MACK, OF AXTELL, KANSAS.
PLOW-LAY HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed. November 6, 1908.
latented June 1, 1909.
Serial No. 461,314.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNST MACK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Axtell, in the county of Marshall and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Plow-Lay Holder, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to plow lay holders and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of its parts, as hereinafter shown and described.
The object of the invention is to rovide an implement especially adapted to be used by smiths for holding plow lays while the same are being worked or sharpened. At such times the lay is subjected to heat, and, if not carefully handled, is liable to warp or twist out of shape, and it is the object of the present invention to provide an implement which is especially adapted to hold the lay in shape while it is being worked up, and, at the same time, afford means whereby the lay may be pitched at a desired angle with rela tion to the handle of the implement, so that the lay may be properly positioned upon an anvil.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the holder applied to a plow lay. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the holder. Fig. 3 is an edge elevation of the holder.
The holder consists of a frame 1, which is provided with a segmental portion 2 and an elongated head portion 3. The portions 2 and 3 are integral. The head portion 3 of the frame is provided with an elongated slot 4, and at the middle of one edge with a'lug 5, which is radially disposed with relation to the segmental portion 2; the said lug 5 is provided with a perforation which is located at the center of the segmental portion 2. The clamping bolts 6 are located in the slot 4 of the head portion 3. The tong member 7 is pivoted at one end to the lug 5 of the head portion 3 of the frame by means of the bolt 8, which passes transversely through the said lug and tong member. The tong member 7 is mounted upon one side of the lug 5 and in the vicinity of the segmental portion 2 is provided with a bowed portion 9 which passes down under and around the opposite side of the segmental portion 2. The pther end of the said tong member 7 is projected into the handle portion 10. The tong member 11 is pivoted to the tong member 7 by means of the pivot 12 which passes transversely through both of the said tong members. The said member 11 has a handle portion 13 and a jaw portion 14, which is located opposite the bend 9 in the member 7.
From the above description it is obvious that a plow lay 15 may be attached to the head portion 3 of the frame 1 by passing the clamping bolts 6 through erforations in the said lay and through the e ongated slot 4 of the said frame head 3, and then tightening the nut upon the said bolt. Thus the head portion 3 of the frame 1 is secured directly to the side of the lay 15 and will serve to hold the same in shape when heated.
The nut upon the bolt 8 is sufficiently loose to permit the tong member 7 to swing frame 1, and when the said tong member 7 is at a desired angle with relation to the head portion 3 of the frame 1, the operator brings the handle portions 10 and 13 of the said tong members together, whereby the jaw member 14 of the tong member 11 will clamp the segmental portion 2 of the frame 1 in the how 9 of the member 7. It will also be seen that the disposition of the tong members 7 and 11 can be quickly changed with relation to the head portion 3 of the frame 1 by swinging the handle portions of the said members apart and turning the member 7 u on its pivot bolt. This holder is reversib e and may be readily used for holding right or left hand lays.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure, by Letters Patent, is
1. A holder comprising a frame, a tong member pivotally connected with the frame, a tong member pivotally attached to the first said tong member, said members having portions which lie upon opposite sides of the frame.
2. holder comprising a frame having a i slotted head portion and a laterally disposed l segmental portion, a tong member pivotally freely along the segmental portion 2 of the connected with the frame at the center of the segmental portion and having a how my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature which receives the segmental portion, a tong in the presence of two Witnesses. member pivotally attached to the first said I ERNST MACK.
