IMPROVEMENT IN CHIMNEY HOLDERS AND FASTENINGS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 52,399, dated February 6, 1866.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, R. H. DEWEY, ot' Pittsfield, in the county of Berkshire and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Chimney-Holder; and I dohereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

Much difficulty and inconvenience have here tofore been experienced to obtain chimneys of the proper size to fit with the requisite degree of closeness upon the tops of kerosene-oil'lamps, the slightest degree of difference in size between the mouth of the chimney and the usual holding devices upon the lamp-top therefor causing the chimney generally to be so loosely held that in moving the lamp about from place to place the chimney frequently becomes detached and falls, breaking itself upon the floor, thus often requiring its replacement with a new one, the expense of which in time is considerable, in addition to the annoyance occasioned by it.

In accompanying plate of drawings my improvements are illustrated, Figure 1 being a central vertical section through a keroseneoil-lamp top with my improvement applied thereto 5 and Fig. 2, ahorizontal section taken in the plane of theline a: at, Fig. l.

which hooks are each set in a short radial other words, nearer to or farther from the central axis of the lamp, thus allowing them to be adjusted with regard to chimneys having mouths of varying sizes within any reasonable limit. I

To operate these hooks in and out, as explained, I pass each of them up through a similar-shaped camway or slot, m,ot'the plate or ring a, arranged upon the top plate, I, so as to be turned about and around upon it, a thumb and set screw, 0, being used upon the outside of the cap-piece I) for convenience in moving and for setting or fixing it in any desired position.

The shape of the cam-slots is such that when their plate a is turned or revolved upon the plate I, either to the right or left, the holding-hooks will be moved away from or toward the center of the lamp, according as a chimney with a month of a larger or small size is being used, the hooks then being made fast, when once adjusted to the size of the chimney, by tightening the set-screw 0 of the plate a.

The advantages of such an arrangement of holding devices for lampchimneys are, of course, many and obvious; and although my improvements have been herein particularly described with reference to kerosene-oil-lamp chimneys, it is manifest they can be applied to other and various styles of lamps, gas burners, &c., for holding globe and other shades.

I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination ot'the sliding hooks f with the ring or plate 12, arranged together and operating substantially in the manner described, and for the purpose specified.
