LAMP SHAOE HOLDER AND SHADE.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, Gnonen E. STOOKWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fitchburg, in the county of YVorcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Shade Holders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which, in connection with the drawings making a part of this specification, will enable others skilled in the art to which my invention belongs to make and use the same.

My invention relates to shade-holders adapt ed to be applied to lamps of any ordinary e0nstruetion; and my invention consists in certain novel features of construction of the shadeholder, as will be hereinafter fully described, and the nature thereof indicated by the claims.

My improved lampshade holder is adapted to be applied to and used in connection with oil-lamps of the ordinary construct-ion, and possesses many advantages over the lamp shade holders now in general use. It is so constructed that it will permit of the shade supported thereon being held at any desired height relatively to the height of the chimney of the lamp. It will also permit of the shade supported thereon being contracted or expanded at will, and the angle at which it hangs varied as desired, as will be hereinafter described.

Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a side view of a lamp provided with my improved shade-holder, having a flexible shade supported thereon and partially encircling the same. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the shade holder, detached from the lamp, shown in Fig. l.

1 have shown in Fig. l of the drawings my improved shade-holder applied to an oil-lamp of ordinary construction. It will be understood that the lamp itself forms no part of my invention, which may be uscdin connection with any other form or design of lamp, The part marked A is a lamp provided with a burner, B,and chimney O, ot'ordiuary construction, A collar, D, provided with a thumb screw, a, encircles and is supported upon the neck of the lamp A, being fitted thereon by simply removing the burner 13 and secured in place by the thnmbscrew a.

From one side of the collar D an arm, 1), extends out, provided witha collar, 0, at its outer end, and a thumb-screw, d, secured therein.

A vertical rod or standard, E, is supported and moves up orv down in the collar 0, being held in place, when properly adjusted, by the thumb-screw d. In connection with the rod E two rings, F and G, forming a part of my shade-holder, are used, which are supported and adapted to slide up or down independently of each other on said rod E.

The lower ring, F, is larger than the upper ring, G. It has an arm, 0, extending toward the center thereof, provided with a collar, f, which has a thumb-screw, g, secured therein. Said collar f is adapted to slide up or down on the rod E or to swing around in either direction, and is secured thereon by means of the thumb-screw g.

The object of making the lower ring, F, adjustable up or down on the rod E is to adjust and vary the spread or expansion of the shade H by simply raising or lowering said ring F, and then securing it in place by the thumbscrew 9.. The upper ring, G, is smaller than the lower ring, F, and has an arm, h, extending out therefrom, provided with a collar, is, in which one end of the ring G is supported, and the other end of said ring is held in said collar by a thumb-screw, Z, so that the same may be disconnected from said collar to allow the flexible shade H, secured on said ring, to be removed with said ring G, if desired. The arm it has a collar, 2, at its other end, which has a thumb-screw, j, therein. Said collar t is adapted to slide up or down on the rod E or to swing around in a horizontal plane in either direction, and is secured on said rod by the thumb screwj.

The angle at which the shade hangs from the ring G may be varied by swinging to the right or left the lower ring, F, so as to change the relative positions of said rings,

I prefer toconnect the ring G with its supportingarm h by means of a collar, 70, and setscrew Z, as above described; but they may be connected together in the same manner as the arm 6 and ring F, or in any other ordinary way.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A lamp-shade holder consisting of a collar adapted to encircle and be secured to the neck of a lamp, and an arm extending out from said collar, in combination with a vertical rod or standard adj ustably supported on said arm, and two rings for supporting the lamp-shade, each adjustably supported on said rod and each adapted to be moved up or down or swung around thereon, for the purpose stated, substantially as shown and described.

2. In a lampshade holder, the combination, with a collar, D, an .arm, 6, extending out therefrom, and the rod or standard E, adjustably supported in the outer end of said arm, of the ring F, an arm, 6, secured thereto and extending toward the center thereof, and adjustably supported at its inner end upon the rod E and the ring G, and an arm, h, extending out therefrom and adjustably supported at its outer end upon said rod E, substantially as shown and described.

3. The combination, with a collar, D, provided with a set-screw, a, arm 11, extending out from said collar, and having a collar, 0, and set-screw b at its outer end, and the rod E, adjustably supported in said collar 0 by means of said set-screw I), of the ring F, an arm, e, secured thereto and extending toward the center of said ring, said arm 6 having a collar and set-screw at its inner end for adj ustably supporting said arm and the ring F on the rod E, and the ring G, and an arm, h, secured thereto and extending out therefrom, said arm h having a collar and set-screw at its outer end for adjustably supporting said arm h and the ring G upon the rod E, all constructed and arranged substantially as shown and described.
