- ."GOMBINED GLOBE ANDGHIMNEY FOR LAMPS.
N0. 257,768. Patented May 9, 1882.
' Lam "liiiii WITNESSES: I YIINVENTOR' 1 W Y ATTORNEY v N. PETERS. Phulo-Liihngmphev. Wuhinghm 0 c.
UNITED STATES PETER SCHNEIDER, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
COMBINED GLOBE AND CHIMNEY FOR LAMPS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of. Letterslatent No. 257,768, dated May 9, 1882. Application filed February 11, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PETER SCHNEIDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New 5 York, have invented a new and useful Comlamp or stand; and the invention consists in a supporting ashade over a combined globe and chimney by means of a ledge or shoulder formed on the globe-chimney and a ring pro vided with arms to connect the base of the shade with the ledge or shoulder.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents my improved globe and chimney with a shade placed over the same and supported by the arms of a ring resting on the shoulder or ledge of the globe and chimney. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of the same, taken on line or 00.
Referring to the drawings,A represents the chimney, and B the globe, preferably made together, as usual in combined globes and chimneys.
U represents the shoulder for supporting the shade. This shoulder extends entirely around the globe-chimney, and by preference it is formed at theline of thejunction of the top of the globe with the base of the chimney, and
by the web which connects the two parts. By this arrangement, when the shade is'placed on the lamp the entire chimney will be above the base of the shade and the globe below it.
D represents the shade, which may be made,
of opaque or translucent glass or other suitable material for reflecting all or a part of the light downward, as may be desired.
The shade shown in Figs, 1 and 2 has a broad base extending outside or beyond the circle of the globe. To support this shade a ring, a, of metal or other suitable material, is placed over the chimney and onto the shoulder 0 which supports it. This ring is pro vided with arms b, having lips-d at the ends. i a When the shade is placed over thechimney its base is rested on the arms, which thus support the shade at the proper height, and the lips d prevent it from slipping sidewise.
The combined globe and chimney may be constructed for use with any sort of burner.
In the arrangement of the shade above described and illustrated it will be observed that the shade is supported around the chimney and above the globe without the use ofa frame connected with the lamp or lamp-stand. By using a separate shade in the above-(1escribed connection the globe and chimney can be made of clear glass, and thus permit the lamp on which it is placed to be used for gencral illumination, or, by placing the shade in position, as a reading-lamp. Furthermore, when the shade is in place it protects the chimney from drafts of cold air, and thereby one cause of the frequent breaking of chimneys will be obviated.
The ring a may be fixed to the base of the shade, if desired, so that the placing of the shade and ring on the globe-chimney and their removal therefrom may be done together.
The chimney A may be made separate from the globe, if desired, in which case the base of the chimney should be arranged to connect with the top of the globe without interfering with the ring or base of the shade.
I claim- '1. A combined globe and chimney for lamps provided with a ledge or shoulder for the support of a shade, in combination with a shade the base of which is extended laterally beyond the base of the chimney, and suitable arms interposed between the base of the shade, and a ring supported on the ledge or shoulder and connecting the base of the shade with the ledge or shoulder, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the shade D, having its base extended laterally beyond the top of the globe, the'ring 11, provided with the arms 1), and the led ge or shoulder O of the combined globe and chimney, substantially as described.
PETER SCHNEIDER.
