Description

1. T. PGPE Lamp Shade Holder.
No. 90,021. Pamnted May11,1869.

igitane 'a mit JOSEPH T. POPE, OP New YORK, N. Y.
Letters Patent No. 90,021', dated Maly ll, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT In-LAMP-SHADE HOLDERS.
The Schedule referred tvo in these Letters Patent and making part of thel same.
To all whom 'it may concern: 'i
Be it known that I, JOSEPH T. POPE, of the city,
county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful' Improvement is Gas and Lamp-Shades;
4and do hereby declare that the following is a general description thereof, reference vbeing had to the accompanyin g drawings, making part of thissp'ecication, of
Figure l is a view of m-y improved lamp-shade asapplied to -a lamp, showing the shade andV holder embracing the neck of thelamp; v
Figure 2, a View of same, showing mirror, or reect- Figure 3, a view of opaque side of shade and its holder, removed from the lamp.
The nature of this invention consists in constructing the lamp-shade holder of .a continuous piece of wire, v
or other suitable material, whichis bent, or formed in suchl manneras to form' a simple hook, for embracing i the -neck of the lamp, and also for holding in its forkends, which form pivots, a shade, having a reiiectingsurface, or mirror on one side, and an opaque surface on-the opposite, said opaque side having sockets, for receptionof the pivots on the fork-end of the holden; so as to enable the shade to be swung round to any desired point .in the periphery of the lamp, andthe shade set at 'any desired angle, its reecting-surface conveying the light of the lamp with multiplied power Yto any desired point, while it protects the eyes of a person reading by the lamp from the glare of the dame, and at the same time gives to the room the beneitv of the lamp-light In the said drawings- A indicates an ordinary lamp, with neck B, burner C, and chimney D.
E is the shade-holder, made of a continuous piece of wire, and'formed with a simple hook, F, for embracing the neck B o'f the lamp, as ,shown in-g. 3, and
with a forlurG, having pivots, h h, which enter corresponding sockets, te', on the opaque side K ofthe mirror-sh ade L, embracing said shade, and enabling thereby adjustment of the shade to any desired angle, and at any point on the periphery of the lamp.
To attach the holder E with its mirror or shade L to the lamp, is merely to rutti the hook F on the neck B ofthe lamp, when said holder will not only embrace the lamp, .but will,'b'y leaning ou the lamp-body, (as
showin in" fig. 2,) sustain` itself and `themirror-shade.
This shade-holderivill lit lamps of various sizes, and
will not crack the chimney, as it has no'connection with it, and is Veryconvenient for' attaching or detaching the shade from the lamp.
I am aware that Letters Patenthave been granted to me for an improvement vin lamp-shade holders,l but I found that in the absence of the simple open vhook F, said patented holder was very inconvenient, and
sometimes dangerous in attaching said holder to lamps I by children or inexperienced persons, and therefore I consider the subject of this application an improvement on the former.
Having described my invention,
What I claim, vand desire to secure by Letters Pat ent, isp The holder E, made of one continuous piece of wire, and'forrning an open hook, F, for attaching to the lamp or gas-burner, and, the combination of .the same with the mirror-shade L by 'the pivots la It and brackets i i, on the backof the shade, for the purposes herein specified.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my signature, this 6th day of April, A. D. 1869. y JOSEPH T. POPE. Witnesses:
A. NEILL, l ARTHUR B. WILLIAMS.
