Description

A. M. HILL. Lamp Shade.
Patented May 9, 1865 Jivveh Z-ar 'mwa W UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AMARIAH M. HILLS, OF HOOKANUM, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAMP-SHADES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 47,638, dated May 9, 1865.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AMARIAH M. HILLS, of Hockanum, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Lamp-Shade; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side sectional view of my invention applied to a lamp; lii g. 2, a detached plan or top view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
This invention relates to a new and improved shade or reflector for an ordinary portable lamp, to relieve the eyes from the flame, and to throw the light down upon the Work or article looked upon.
The object of the invention is to obtain a shade which may be readily applied to and detached from the lamp, and one which will not render the room so dark as the ordinary shades in use.
A represents a metallic rim composed of a strip of metal bent in the form of a circle, with its sides inclined to form a narrow frusturn of a cone, as shown clearly in Fig. 1. B is an eXtensions-upport composed of a tube, a, which is secured by solder or otherwise to the rim A at right angles, and B is a rod, the upper part of which is fitted in the tube a, the latter having a slot, 0, made longitudinally in it to receive a pin, d, which projects from the rod b and prevents the tube a from turning on the rod. The lower end of the tube a is bent slightly outward, forming a flange for the thumbnail to press against to raise and lower the tube a,.and consequently the rim A and the shade G, which is fitted upon it. The shade C may be of paper or other material made in the form of a frustum of a cone and fitted on the rim A, as shown in Fig. l. The rod 6 at its lower end is bent around to a horizontal position or at right angles to its other or main portion, as shown in Fig. 1, and has a spring, D, attached to its end. This spring should be bent in the form of rather more than a semicircle, (see Fig. 2,) so that it may clasp applied to and detached from the lamp with the greatest facility while the latter is in use, and the shade 0 may be quite narrow, so as not to darken the room materially and still cast the light down upon the work, book, or other article on which the eyes of the user rest. great advantage in those cases where chimneys are used on lamps, as the former will not be liable to be broken, as is now the case, in consequence of the shade support being fixed on them.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A lamp-shade, composed of paper or other suitable material, made in the form of a frustum of a cone, or any approximate shape, and fitted on a horizontal metallic rim or band, which is secured to a vertical extension-support having a clamp at its lower end to fit upon the neck of the lamp-burner or socket thereof, substantially as herein set forth.
2. The particular manner of constructing the clamp, as herein shown and describedto wit, of a spring bent so as to form rather more than a semicircle, and having levers or fingerpieces attached for the ready adjustment of the clamp to the lamp or burner, as described.
A. M. HILLS.
