Description

J. T. POPE.
Reflector.
No. 88,206. Patented March 23, 1869."
Fig Z.
N. PETERS, Phom-Lithographer. Washington, D. c
tluited fitatet game em JOSEPH T. POPE, 0,1 NEW YORK, N. Y. Letters Patent No. 88,206, dated Ma/rch 23. 1869.
To all whom it ma concern:
Be it known that 1, JOSEPH-T. Porn, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Combination of Shaving-Mirror and Lamp, or Gas-Shade; and do hereby declare that the following is a general description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, of which- Figure 1 represents my invention in use as a shaving-mirror.
Figure 2 represents the same as a lamp-shade, adjustable to any point in the periphery of the lamp, and at any angle.
Figure 3 represents a top view of my invention, as removed fioin the lamp.
The nature of my invention consists in the construc tion of an open holder, composed of one piece of wire, or other suitable material,'bent and formed so as to embrace the collar, or neck of a lamp, and to receive on its fork-ends, which form pivots, a shaving-mirror, which, by turning over on its pivots, in like manner can be used as a lamp-shade, and swung round to any desired point on the periphery of the lamp, conveying the light of the same, with multiplied power, to any desired point, while it protects the eyes at the same time from the glare of the lamp-flame.
In the said drawings- \A indicates an ordinary kerosene-lamp, provided with a sun-burner and chimney.
' B is the mirror, or shade-holder, composed of one piece of wire, bent and fashioned as shown in figs. 1 and 3, with parallels, G G, to embrace the collar of the lamp, a vertical and curved projection, D, which bears up against the burner, (thereby supporting said holder,)
and arms E E, which form pivots e e on their outer ends,
on which the mirror, or shade F, having corresponding bearings'g g, turns; said mirror, orshade having on the side m an opaque surface, and on the reverse side, n, a reflecting surface, or looking-glass.
To place the holder B, with its mirror, or shade F, on the lamp, merely pass the open portion H of theholder over the chimney until the parallels O 0 rest on the body of the lamp; then draw the holder forward, when the holder B, with its mirror, or shade F, will be securely attached to the lamp, and can be swung around the lamp to any desired point, and used as a shaving-mirror, as shown in fig. 1, or as a lamp shade, as shown in fig. 2. 7 1
This holder will fit lamps of various sizes, and will not crack the chimney, as it has no connection with 'it; and when it is desired to use my invention in connection with a gas-burner, I use the same continuous wire with a double coil.
What I claim as my-invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the shade and mirror F, and the mirror-holder B, constructed and arranged with its bent portions 0 D and curved portions E E, so as to attach to an ordinary lamp-burner, substantially as and'for the purposes herein specified.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my signature, February 4, A. D. 1869.
