UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
J UIJIUS KOPP, OF HOBOKEN, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN ATTACHMENTS FOR GAS-BURNERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 82,231, dated September 15, 1868.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIUs KOPP, of the city of Hoboken, county of Hudson, and in the State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Adjustable Caps for Gas-Burners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a clear, full, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section.
The same letters of reference indicate identical parts.
The nature of my invention consists in providing gas-burners with an adjustable cap, made of iron, brass, or other perforated metal or wire-gauze, through which the gas passes.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A is an adjustable cap, made to fit over any ordinary burner. It is made of woven or perforated metal, tapering off toward the top A. The lower part of the cap is constructed as shown in Fig. 1.
A A, &c., are flanges of a triangular shape, with the points extending downward. These flanges A A serve the purpose of holding the cap on any desired place of the neck of the burner, and allow it to be drawn far enough down to rest on the top of the gasburner.
If desired, the cap may be kept in a position, leaving a space between the top of the cap and the top of the burner, as shown in Fig. 2.
The force with which the gas escapes out of the burner will, particularly where 0il-gas is used, throw the body of the flame in some distance above the mouth of the burner, and cause an unsteady flame, which does not give much light.
In order to bring the flame down to the mouth of the burner, it is necessary to turn 0E part of the gas, and the flame will be much reduced in size and brilliancy.
I am aware that something similar to my invention is described in the application for provisional protection in England, by W. Prest- Wick, January 8, 1857, but I do not claim what he describes; but
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
An adjustable cap, A, constructed of woven or perforated metals, with flanges A A A, substantially as and for the purpose set forth, as an article of manufacture.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
D. P. HOLLOWAY, O. F. OLAUSEN.
