Description

"PATENTBD MAY 16; .1905. A. H. SASSMAN. MANTLE FOR GAS BURNERS."

PATENT OFFICE.
AMBROSE H. SASSMAN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD TO ADOLPH O. MEYER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., AND ONE-THIRD TO WILLIAM F. KOERNER, OF BROOKLYN, N. Y.
MANTLE FOR GAS-BURNERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 790,265, dated May 16, 1905. Application filed December 10, 1904.. Serial No. 236,266.
To aZZ whom it may concern: Be it known that I, AMBROSE H. SASSMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, boroughof Manhat- 5 tan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Mantles for Gas-Burners, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. The object of my invention is to provide a I mantle especially adapted for use in connection with gas-burners used for heating purposes, which mantle so surrounds the burner as to direct the heat from the burner in concentrated form in an upward direction and at I the same time is so far removed from the burner that the fiame from the burner will create a suction, drawing up air between the mantle and burner, which air is heated and conducted upward with the actual heat from Q 2 the flame of the burner.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a plan view of a gas heating- 3 stove having the improved mantle applied.
Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section taken practically on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, and Fig.
3 is a perspective view of the mantle.
The mantle is made of asbestos or of a composition of which asbestos is the most prominent element, and the said mantle is open at the top and at the bottom and at its upper portion is preferably inwardly and upwardly inclined, as is shown at A in the drawings. 4 The base portion of the mantle is of greater diameter than its upper portion, as is shown in Fig. 3. The base portion of the mantle is surrounded by a metal band or hoop 10, so as to hold the mantle in perfect shape, and the said mantle is of slightly larger dimensions than the burner it is adapted to surround, so that an open space is provided between the burner and the mantle, and the said mantle is of such height that it extends but slightly above the upper portion of the burner.
7 Any improved form of clamp may be employed for attaching the mantle to the supply-pipe of the burner. In the drawings the form of clamp illustrated consists of an upwardly-extending arm 11. which-is ordinarily passed between the band or hub 10 and the mantle, and a socket-section 12, which is adapted to receive the supply-pipe for the burner. The said socket 12 is provided with horizontal extension members 13, through which extension members 13 a bolt 14: or its equivalent is passed, so as to clamp the socket on the supply-pipe for the burner.
I desire it to be understood that I do not confine myself to asbestos as the material for thebody portion of the mantle, as any nonheat-condueting material maybe employed for the purpose.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. As an improved article of manufacture, a mantle for the burners of gas heating-stoves, consisting of a ring-like body of a non-heatconducting material, and means carried by the said body for securing the same to the supply-pipe of the burner.
2. As an improved article of manufacture, a mantle for the burners of gas heating-stoves, comprising a ring-like body of asbestos having its upper end contracted and a clamp secured to the lower portion of the said body.
3. As an improvedarticle of manufacture, a mantle for the burners of gas heating-stoves, comprising a ring-like body of a non-heatconducting material, contracted at its upper portion and open at its top and at its bottom,
a reinforcing-band for the lower portion of the mantle, and a clamp attached to the said lower portion of the mantle, for the purpose described. v
In testimony whereofl have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
I AMBROSE H. SASSMAN.
Witnesses:
MYRON SWART, M. H. MEYERS.
