JOHN 0. LOVE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR .TO
HIMSELF AND SILAS FULLER, OF SAME PLACE.
Letters Patent No. 93,101, dated July 27, 1869.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN 0. LOVE, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented an. Attachment for Gas- Buruers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention consists of a device, described here after, to be attached to ordinary gas-burners, so as to enable me to use in connection therewith an ordinary cylindrical chimney, such as are applied to argandburners.
In order to enable others to make and apply my invention, I will now proceed to describe the mode of carrying the same into effect, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section of my attachment applied to a gas-burner;
Figure 2, the same removed from theburne'r; and
Figure 3, a plan view- Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views. I
A is an ordinary gas-tip, screwed to the end of a pipe, B, in the usual manner.
To the tip or the pipe is securedthe chimney-holder, which' consists of a perforated casing, D, of the form of an inverted cone, an outer casing, E, in the present instance of a cylindrical shape, being secured to the upper end of the perforated casing, or forming part of the same, and the casing E terminating below in a flange, a, on which the chimney G rests, the chimney being steadied in its place by any suitable number of springs, e.
There is a space between the two casings D and E, the said space being open below and closed above, with the exception of two openings, 2: x, which are situated opposite to each other, and are so arranged that they shallbe adjacent to the edges of the usual wide-spreading flame.
Although the above-described chimney-holder may be connected to the tip or to the pipe in a variety of ways, I prefer the plan illustrated in. the drawing, on reference to which it will be observed that there is an internal flange at the lower end of the inner casing D.
This flange rests on the collar f of the pipe B, and is confined thereto by the lower end of the tip.
By this arrangement not; only are all complex fastenings dispensed with, but the holder can be readily turned and adjusted to such a position that its openings, a; x, are adjacent to the edges of the flame.
A plentiful supply of air is admitted to the interior of the chimney through the perforations of the casing I I), and also through openings y y in the flange a, but
special currents of" air pass through the openings :1: x, I Y
and protect the chimney from the effects of the projecting edges of the flame, thus enabling me to use a cylindrical chimney, or a chimney cylindrical helow and tapering above, as shown in the drawing.
I claim as'my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The within-described holder, consisting of the perfor-ated casing D, outer flanged casing E, and openings 90 a, between the casings, when the whole is combined with an ordinary gas-burner, substantially in the manner described.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. I I
JOHN 0. LOVE.
Witnesses:
JOHN WHITE, HARRY .SMITH.
