Description
PATENT OFFICE.
AUGUSTUS HAYE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPRCVEMENT IN ADJUSTABLE REFLECTORS FOR LAMPS, &c.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,282, dated July 25, 1871.
To all whom it may concern Be it lknovvntliat I, AUGUSTUS HAYE, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented an Adjustable Reilector for Lamp, Gas, Calcium and other Lights, of which the following is a specification:
Having observed that the use of movable lamps and flexible gas-light tubes, in connection with stationary retlectors, as at present employed to illuminate shop-Windows, halls, theaters, Svc., was
attended With danger, for the reason that the reilector, being stationary, the lamp or lieXible gaslight tube had to be adjusted to the reflector, during which adjustment the lamp and flexible gas-tube often slipped, setting lire to the merchandise in the Window or the scenes or combustible paraphernalia of the theater. To remedy this defect in adjustable lights and stationary reiiectors, and evade the danger attendant on their use, I reverse the order of arrangement, or, in other Words, make the lamp or gas-light tube stationary, and with proper mechanism make the reflector adjustable, thereby throwing the reiiected light in any desired direction and avoiding danger, as I Will further explain by reference t0 the accompanying drawing, in Which- Figure lis a side elevation, showing stationary gas-light tube and adjustable light-reflector 5 Fig. 2, an edge View; Fig. 3, a top view, and Fig. 4, a horizontal section of same.
In the said drawing, A indicates a Wall-plate,
attached to a Wall or column in any proper manner, said plate being provided With projections B B near its ends for reception 0f the journals C C of a partiallyr0tating bar, D. This rotating bar has a set-screw, E, to one or both of its journals, for holding the bar in position, and has also a rack, F, on which a bracket, G, slides, said bracket being provided with a spring-pawl, H, and an operating set-screw, I, which presses the spring-pawl into the recesses of the rack and holds the bracket at the desired height. This bracket is also provided With a journal, K, on its outer end for reception of a socket, L; and setscrew M on the reliector N and O represents the gas-tube.
It will be seen that by this construction the I relector, which may be of polished metal or a mirror, &c., and of any desired shape, can be adjusted horizontally by the bar D, vertically by the rack and pawl F H, and obliquely by the journal K in relation to the gas-tube 0.
What I claim is- The Wall-plate A, rotary bar D, rack F, paWl H, bracket G, and reflector N, all arranged and operating substantially as and for the purposes described and set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my signature this 26th day of June, 1871.
Witnesses: AUGUSTUS HAYE.
ARTHUR NEILL, HENRY W. WIGGINS.
