IMPROVEMENT IN LAMPS.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JOHN BELLERJEAU, of the city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and improved Attachment to Coal-Oil Lamps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specication, in which- Y s Figure 1 representsa side elevation of my invention partly in section.
Figure 2`is a side view ofthe attachment.
Figure 3 is a plan ofthe same.
Figure 4 is a perspective view ofthe same.
This invention consists in so arranging anl annular plate, having an' annular hole in its centre, to which are attached three or more pendant-springs terminating in hooks or rests, and sorsecuring it to the burner, that when a glass chimney is placed over and around the annular plate and pemlant-springs, the base resting o 'terminating-hooks, the chimney is securely fastened to the lamp.
D is a common lamp-burner, to which annular plate F is securely fastened, by slipping the burner through hook a until plate F rests on flange E of the burner; then turning down on plate F one or more of the points of the burner above the flange E. To the under surface of plate F are attached three or more pendant-springs B, terminating in hooks or rests C. A
The glass chimney 3/ is slipped over plate F and pendant-springs Bresting onv hooks C. It should be so arranged that the external diameter of annular plate F should coincide as nearly as possible, or be at least'very little smaller than the internal diameter of the lower part of the chimney; thus the draught will not b e impaired by too much air passing betweecn plate F and the chimney. Pendantsprings B should be so arranged as to press outwardly and equally against the inside of the chimney when at rest; thus the chimney cannot possibly fall olf. The heut generated in burning beingr above plate F, the springs B are not annealedby use, and that part of the chimney which extends below annular plate F remains perfectly cool, so that it may be removed, cleaned, and replaced while burning.
Springs terminating in rests springing outward or inward may be used, when connected below the flange of the ordinary coal-oil burner, with the same result.
Annular plate F of this attachment may have a tubular lower attachment connected to it, by means of which it may he attached to a coal-oil burner in the same manner that the ordinery chimneys are.
Having thus Vdescribed my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- Pendant-springs B, terminating in hooks'or rests C, when attached to the lower side of an annular plate, F, having an annular hole, A, in its centre, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described.`
Tile above specification of my invention signed by me, this 7th day of February, 1868.
' JOHN BELLERJEAU.
