TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JON W. SCHRIBRR, of New York, inthe lcounty of New York, and State of New York, have invented a new andinseful Improvement in Lampfliurners; and I do-hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in tho art te` make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specificatiom in which- Figure 1 represents a vertical` transverse section of my improved lampbnrner,V
Figure 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same.
Similar letters .of reference indicate like parts. 4
This invention relates to a new burner for eoalfoil and other lamps, itsobjet being to cause'thc complete combustion oi' all the oil elevated by the wick.
The invention consists,- first, in supporting theA lamp-chimney on lugs' or 'springs that project from the solid base of the burner, so that an open space is left below the lower edge of thc chimney for the air to pass to the outside of the ame.
The invention consists, second, in the use ot' an outer wicktube, which reaches-abovc-the upper 'endet the .main wick-tube, and which .rests upon springs, that hold it as high up as possible, so that a horizontal circular plate projecting from it is held against a contracted portion ofthe chimney; v
The invention also consists in hinging the cap of the burner to the aforesaid circular plate, or to the plate upon which it rests, so that it can befoldcd back to facilitate the lighting ofthe lamp.-
' The invention finally consists in so shaping the cap that it will', although itvhas a circular base, ine|t be conical, but with iiat sides, so that the air is more equally conducted to the flame.
A, in the drawing, represents the body or dead-air chamber ot' a lamp-burner.
B is thc main wick-tube arranged therein. i, i
C is the upper plate of the body, and the base-pluto of the upper appendage o'f the same. i
The plate Cprojects from the sides of the body, as shown, and is not perforated, except where the wicktube passes through it.y
D represents a secondary wick-tube. The sume is fitted around the upper portion of the main tube B, and projects above the same, as is clearly .shown'in thc drawing.
From the tube D projectsapcrforated plate, E, between which, and the baseiplate, springs a t are arranged, that serve to elevate the tube D, and its appendages, they forming thc supportof the same. i
F F are spring-holders, attached to the plate C, and projecting upon and from the saine. They are bent inward, as at in iig. 2, or arc otherwise provided each with `a shoulder, IJ, tenablc them to support the chimney above the plate C, thereby an open space is produced between thc lower edge of the chimney andthc plate C,
for the air `to pass in. 4
The chimneys to bc used in connection with this burner are to 4have a contracted portion opposite the plate E, the said plate E being, bymeans of thc springs a, held against the narrow partof the chimney, as :is clearly shown in fig. 2, and, as not all chimneys are-made exactly alike, the springs a will cause the plate E to adjust itself` to chimneys in which the contractedportion is higher or lower. i
G is the cap of thc burner. rlhe same is not of trnly conical shape, but has its upper partnnarrow, parallell with the slot. Heretoiorc the caps were always made conical, and were therefore wider opposite thc middle of the slot than they were opposite the ends of the same, and a' larger supply of air was consequently brought to the middle of the iiaic than to the ends of thesaine By making the upper part of the cap narrow, ,an equal supply of air willbe brought to all parts 'of the flame. i
The cap G is hinged to thc plate E. as shown, to allow-'its being easily swung open, for the purpose of facilitating the 'lighting of thc lamp From the plate C projects a rod, H, which serves to support and `hold a' reiiector on the outside of thr` chimney, as indicated in figs. 1 and 2.
Having thus described my ipven'tlonhl claim as new, end deere to secure by Letters Patentl.l The secondary tube D, arranged around the meinwek-tu'be of a burner, and projectingv above the some, when said secondary tube'is, by means ofrsprlngs a a, that t under a. plate, E, projecting fron: the tube, held up, and lzrdjuxted up -:md downv,`as' sel; forth. v .f 1 y l .l 'A
2. Closing the chimney of la. lamp-burner', by means of a', perforated plate, E, whioh ie held up ngans: a* contracted portion ofthe chimney by means of springal a, -us described, so that all the. oir will havelo'pnseto the llame throxgh 'che said plate E.
3. A lamp-burner, consisting of `the`borvly`,`tlube gland base-plate C`,Iin combnatlon with tb'e'secondory 4 tubeD, perforated plate E, springs @cop G, and `@ring-lm lders F F, or their equivalents, all made and operat ing substantially as hereinhow'and described.- A
