WILLIAM W; HORTON, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
Letters Patent No. 77,614, dated Zlfay 5, 1868,
IMPROVEMENT IN LAMP-BURNERS.
an fittgetnlt rrfcmt tr in that ihttut intent rut mating part at the an.
TO ALL PERSONS TO WHOM THESE PRESENTS MAY COME:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. HORTON, of the city and county of Providence, and State of Rhode Island, have-invented anew and useful Improvement in Burners for Lamps; and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification, and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which..
Figure 1 is a top view,
Figure 2 a front elevation, I
Figures 3 and 4 vertical sections, and
Figure 5 a bottom view of the burner.
Figure 6 is an under side yiew of the cone or air-deflector, which has a bar, a, extending across it diametricully, and being provided with a slot, 6, formed to slide on and fit to the wick-tube, c, of the burner.
The body of the burner is shown, at A, as having a wick-tube going through and fastened to it, such body part A being provided with a male screw, (Z, to enable it to be screwed into the cap of the neck of alamp. reservoir,
The cone or air-defieetor is shown, at B, as supported on a flat annulus, G, which surrounds the wick-tube, and is sustained in position-by a bar, e, which rests on the top of the bodv A. extends across the same diametrically, and is fastened to the annulus-C.
The said annulus G has a lip or flange,f, extending down from it at and around its periphery, the same being to strengthen the annulus, and also to aflord support to an annular chimney-supporter or-ring, D, which encompasses and fits to the flangef, and extends both above and below it in manner as represented, such chimney-supporter being sustainedby pins gg, extending from its inner surface, and resting on the annulus C.
The base of the chimney rests on these pins, and there is a. series of air-holes, h It, made through the ring.
An annular air-fender or current guard, E, projects down from the fiat ring 0, and to or a little below the top of a flange, it, which extends upward from the periphery-0f a perforated-flat annulus, F, that surrounds and projects from the body A, in manner as represented in the drawings.
This annulus F has a series of air-holes, Z Z, made through it, their centres being arranged under or about under the guard E.
The said guard E, arranged with respect to the flangesf and is, in manner as represented, serves to intercept any lateral currentof air, which, by rushing into the opening 122, between the flanges, and impinging against the regular supply-currents passingup through the holes I, would cause the flame of the wick to flicker.
The chimney-holder D has a series of notches, it, formed in it, at and about its lower edge, such being to admit air to pass into the burner, and in a series of currents; v
The chimney designed to be used on this burner'is to be cylindrical at its lower part or base, and to fit or nearly fit into the chimney-holder D, and rest on the pins g thereof. By taking hold of thesaid holder D, it, with the'chimney, when sustained by it, may be readily lifted off the cone-supporterO.
In the operation of this burner, the air to enter the cone or air-deflector B, enters the burner through the openings 1122. That which enters by the opening in will hedeflected, by the guard E, toward the currents rising through the openings Z, the guard E serving, when the lamp is moved about in the hand, or when a lateral movement of air may be blowing against it, t-o preventthc flame from jumping or flickeririg.
The aerial currents for supply of or to enter the chimney and pass over the cone, pass through the perforations or holes of thechimney-supporter. p
I claim the chimney-supporter D, consisting of the ring, with its studsg and perforations or air-holes,
arranged as specified.
I also claim the combination, as well as the arrangement, of the guard E, the perforated annuliv G and F, and the fiange k, with the body A and wick-tube of the burner.
' I WM. W. HORTON. Witnesses:
