IMPROVEMENT IN LAMPS.

TO WHOM. ITMAY CONCERN:
Be it known that we, Rurus S. MEnnrLL'and WILLIAM GAnLnfroNfof Boston, in the county of Suffolk, and State of Massachusetts; have -invented certain new and useful-Improvements in Lamp-Burners; and we hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in Whichi Figure 1 is a vertical central sectionA of a burner constructed in accordance with our invention.
Figure 2 is alike section of the same on the line x "j, iig. 1.
Figure 3 is an elevation of-the removable cone .and ehimneylholder, detached from the other portion of the burner. i
This invention relates to that class of burners having the cone and chimney-holdermounted upon a sleeve, which lits or slides upon the wick-tube, the object of such construction being not only to isolate the base ofthe burner `from those parts which are contiguous to or in the immediate neighborhood of the dame, but also to admit of the latter parts being readilyremoved from thewick-tube, so as to uncover the wick Whenever it is required to trim or to light the same. In applications now pending before the United States Patent Oiiice,'in the names of R. S. MERRILL, and R. S. MERRILL and WILLIAM CAnLnroN, the advantages of such construction are fully pointed out and explained, and need not be here repeat-ed In the accompanying drawings, the base, A, of the burner, which tits over the orifice in the top ofthe fluidreceptacle or reservoir of the hydrocarbon-Huid lamp,- carries, as usual, the wick-tube B and rack C, for clevating or loweringthe wiclL The base is covered by a cap, D, ivhich shuts in and encloses the rack C, and orifices in the wick-tube and hase, so as to exclude all danger of explosion which would arise if the vapor of the volatile Huid which exudes from the oriticesin the Wick-tube, and gathers in the base, were free to communicate with the dame. The wick-tube B extends some distance above the cap, and has fitted upon it a. sleeve, a, to which arev attached, by suitable means, (in this instance by means of the gauze or perforated plate 5,) the chimney-rest and holder c, and the cone or dedector CZ.. The sleeve is capable of sliding up and down upon the tube, so that it, together with the chimney-holder and cone which it carries, can be removed from or fitted upon the said tube with perfect facility. A
When the wick 'is lighted, in order to replace the sleeve and theparts it carries (which have been previously removed in order to light the wick.) upon the wick-tube, without danger of extinguishing theA iame, openings or perforations e are formed in the sides of the sleeve, through which, while the sleeve is being slipped down over the wick-tube, the ame receives a suiiicient supply of air to keep it alive until the sleeve has reached its proper position and ceases to encircle the dame.
The combination of the sleeve and upper part of the burner' with the base 4and wick-tube, as well as the peculiar construction of the sleeve itself, are the subjects of applications, which, as above mentioned, are now pending in the United States Patent OHice. The improvement Which it is nonY desired to secure by Letters Patent has reference to the construction of what may be termed the upper or removable section ofthe burner, consisting of the sleeve end parts which it carries, thev object-being to better adapt such section for common vand every-day use.
In this portion of the burner, as ueretofore made', the metal diaphragm or gauze, which closes the bottom of the cone and chimney-rest, has been given a concavo-convex form, the convexity being upon the exterior surface of. the plate or gauze; and not'only this, but the lower end of the sleeve has extended down some distance below the base of the chimney-rest, so thatwhen the section is removed from the tube, and placed upon the table or other place where the lamp happens to be, it cannot be set down in an upright position without great danger of falling over, and thus breaking the chimney, which is held in t'he chimney-rest; for, resting, as it does, upon the narrow and contracted base formed by the bottom Aof the sleeve, any slight `jar will suffice to destroy its equilibrium, while, if the base of the sleeve is made iush with the gauze or diaphragm, the rounded surface of the latter forbids the possibility of the section occupying an upright position, but it must be placed upon its side, in which position it `is very-liableto roll from the table or other place where it lies.
The object of the-,present invention is to so construct'the section as to give it a broad base, upon which it may standsecurely when detached or removed from the burner. '.lo this end, as shown in the drawings, the gauze or perforated plate b, which extends over the bottoni of the section, is made concave on its under side, B0 that the point of it@ greatest depression shall be where'vit joins with the annularehimney-holder e; or, if preferred, the diaphragm may have a plane surface, ilush with the bottom oi: the elimney-holder.` In either case, however, the lower end of the 'sleeve a should not extend below the bottom ot the'ehimney-holder, but ought, as shown in the drawing, to stop a little short of thelplane in which the base of the said annular holder lies. When s. section thus constructed is removed from the burner, and set down upon a table or other suitable place, it will be seen that, as represented in fig. 3, the section will stand upon the broad base formed by the annular chimney-holder, and will thus be-maintained steadily in an upright position. The position upon the wicktube of the sleeve a, and parts b c d which it carries, is shown in figs, 1 and 2. *'lhe metal diaphragm,'or perforated plate b, is' soldered or otherwise suitably Secured both to the sleeve a and to the chimney-holder c, and
serves to maintain the sleeve and the cone and chimney-holder in their proper relations to each other. The lower end of the sleeve rests *sn the cap D, which is of suteient height 'to hold the sleeve and parts which it i carries at the proper distance above the base of the burner, so as to remove the latter from, the immediate neiahborhood of the ehimney-holder'and other parts liable to become highly heated by the Home.
Having now described our invention, and the manner invwhich the same is or maybe carried into effect, we will state our claim, as follows:
In a lemp-burner in which theeoneand chimney-holder are connected with a sleeve fitting thewick-tube, We claim the arrangement of the parts, substantially in the manner herein described, so that .the removable A parts'otl the burner, when taken from the wick-tube, may be deposited in an upright position, and supported upon n broad base, as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof, we have signed our names to this specification before two subscribing witnesses.
RUFUS SPAULDING MERRILL, -WILLIAM CARLETON.
