Description

ALVIN lTAPLiN, or: SoMnRviLnE, MASSACHUSETTS.
Leda-3 Patent N0, 74,863, dated February 25, 186s.
IMPROVEMENT nv LAMPS.

vTO .ALL PERSONSn TO WOM THESE PRESENTS MAY COME:
Be it lrnown that I, ALVIN TAPLIN,i-of Somerville, in the county. of. Middlesex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Burners for Lamps; and I `do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification, and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figurel is a vertical and transverse section of a lamp and burner provided with my invention.
`figure 2 is a side elevation of the lamp,- with the burner turned down, for the purpose of enabling the lamp to bef supplied with oil.
In the drawings, A denotes the body,vB the wick-tube, and C the conical deector o f the burner, the said deilector being hinged to ihe body, and provided with a spring-catch, a, to hold it down upon the body. D is the body or oil-reservoir of the lamp, and b 'is the metallic cap thereof, it being fixed on the neck e of such body,
and having a female screw, d, cut'on its interior periphery in the ordinary way.
In the construction of burners as heretofore made, it has been customary to form the body thereof, at its lower part,.with a male screw, to screw into .the lamp-cap or mouth'of the oil-reservoir of the lamp.
In carrying out my present invention or improvement, I make the `body of the burner' without any male screw, andI hinge to the body a concaveannulus, E, provided with a lmale screw, e, to fit and screw into the female screw al of the'lamp-body or cap b. The hinge of the annulus and body is shown atf. A spring-catch, g, may be applied to the body, and so formed asV to catch upon the annulus, and hold-the body down thereto, when necessary `for it to be so held. This attachment tothe burner enables the burner t'o be turned down so as to open the mouth'of the lamp-cap, for the purpose of allowing oil to berpoured into thesame. u 4
'I am aware thatit isnot new to hinge orso applya lamp-burner to the body of a lamp as to be capable of being'turned down upon or moved laterally aside from the mouth of the body. Therefore I donot claim such in the abstract. I amralso aware of the invention described in the United States Patent,rNo. 41,972, granted March 27, 1864, to Marshall Burnett, which consists ofy a. device madeinvtwp pieces,rs o connected as toA enable one to be moved laterally on and olf the other, the lower ofV such piecesbeing provided with amale screw, and the upper havingafemale screw, themale screw being to screw into a lamp-cap, and the female screw being'to receive the screw of the bottom ofithe body of a burner.. My invention differs materially from the invention of the said Burnett, aswhere he employs two'pieces to accomplish his invention, I employbut one, which is hinged to the burner. i, l V Y V My invention diifers from that for which I have recently' applied for a patent, such application for such patent'having been l'ed in the-Patent Oiiice on or about the Jfirst day of December, A. 13.11866, such-.invention consisting mainly'in the combination'of,` an annular'cover, provided with a female screw "with the lamp-cap, the
twoibeing directly hinged together, so as to'enahle the cover to be turned or moved on and off the mouth of the cap, such cap having no female screw cut in it.
It will be observed that the last-mentioned improvementof necessity requires the cap to be constructed i somewhat larger in diameter than it would have to be were it to be made in the ordinary way', witha female screw of the same size as that of the annular cover hinged to such cap. Thus it will be seen that the invention is inapplicable to cominonlamp-caps, formed with female screws in their mouths. I Y
My present invention enables the burner to be applied toany such lamp-cap whose screw is of a proper size toA receive and screw upon the male screwof the'ar`1nulnsl hinged to the bottom of the burner, and conse -quent-ly my present improvement n ot only accomplishesV the desired result, incident to others hreinbefore referred to, but it doesithis by one annulus only hinged to the burner, and separate from the cap of the oilreservoirof the lamp.
My-invention also differs from eitherv of those described in the United States Patents, No. 39,253, dated July- 14, 186s, No; 46,691, dated March 7,1868, ddd No. 56,497', dated July 17, 186e, for in neither of them dow .find my improvemenithat is, the annulus made' to screw into the neck or cap of the reservoir, and-connected with the burner by a hinge only. i V
In Patent No, 39,253, the c'onnectionfwith the annulus is by'screws and a hinge, the screws being formed on the burner and in a separate annulus or lever; thus requiring the burner to have a malescrew. i
Y In Patent No. 46%691, the'burner is formed with aJ sciew, and screws Vdiectly into the neuk or vcap ofthe reservoir, and is held in connection by a. wire spring' or springs, there being 4no seperate ,nnnulus to screw into the neck or cap, ond be hinged to the burner. I.
In Patent No. 56,497 there is no annulus separote from 'and to screw into the neck or cap of the reservoir, the burnerbeing fixed directly to the cap, so :Le to turn in a horizontal plane on and od' the same.
Therefore what I claim. asmyl invention, vis-V i l l u My improved lampburner, constructed with the annulus E, to screw into theneck or cap of the oil-reservoir D, and with'theb'ody'A connected with the annulus by a. hinge only; the whole being in order that the body, hy means of the hinge and the annulus, inay be 'connected with the resevfv'oit oi its ap, in monner as specified', and the bodybemovable, relatively to s'nehnnnulus, substantilly as andfor the purpose set forth.
