LAMP-SUPPORT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 258,674, dated May 30, 1882.

To all whom yit may concern Bo it known that I, HEINRICH RAUPI), a subject ot' the Kingdom of Wrtemberg, German Empire, residing; at the city of Heilbronn, in the Kingdom of Wrtemberg, German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Imfollowing is a specitication.

This invention relates to extension or telescopic pendants for lamps or gasburners; and the nature of my invention consists in a tubular extensible support or bracket composed of fixed tubes connected at their upper ends by a transverse tube, and provided at the lower end with friction stuffing boxes and adjustable devices therefor, and also with extension-tubes adapted to slide in the fixed tubes and connected together by a transverse connecting-tube, in combination with a lamp and a shade having independent supports on said connectingtube, all being arranged and constructed as will be understood from the following description, when taken in connection with the annexed drawings.

In the accompanying drawings, Figures 1 and 2 represent side elevations of myimproved extension lam p-support, showing different forms of the same.

a. a are two fixed and parallel tubes, which are vertically suspended from a transverse tube, b, that is centrally' attached to the gasconducting tube suspended from the ceiling. The transverse connecting-tube b is provided below the suspending-tube with a smoke-bell, d, to collect the unburned carbon particles of the lamp. The tubes a a are provided at their lower ends with stuting-boxesf, within which are guided the extension-tubes g, that slide into or out of the exterior tubes, a a.. The stufn g-boxes f are provided with adjustablc clamp-screws ff, by means of which the packing in said boxes can be tightened against the tubes g when required for producing the necessary friction to prevent these tubes from casually slipping and for compensating for wear. This is a common form of stuffing-box. The extension-tubes g are connected at their lower ends by a transverse tube, h, which serves for the support of the burner i and the shade l when the lamp is used for gas, or for support ing a petroleum or other lamp when the supporting device is not used for gas.

It will be seen that I provide on opposite sides of the burner fi supports A A for the shade B, which supports are so constructed that they rmly hold the shade by its baseindependently of the said burner.

The modification of the shade supports shown in Fig. 2 consists in passing the upturned portions of the transverse tube h through the shade, thus affording supports for it independently ot and on opposite sides ofthe burner. The burner is thus accessible witl1- out removing the shade B, and the latter is movable up and down with the extensible part of the pendant.

The tixed tubes a a may also be arranged with bracket-lamps m, as shown invFig. 1, and ornamented in any suitable manner.

By the arrangement described the main lamp supported on the extension-tubes can be drawn down to the full length of the exterior tubes, as the whole length ofthe support can be used for this purpose. f"

As the stuffing-boxes are arranged sidewise of the lamp, they are not liable to be heated by the heat of the same, the lamp being retained by the friction exerted by the stutngboxes on the extension-tubes at any desired position without the use of balancing weights or springs.

Having thus described myinvention,I claim as new and desire to secure byLetters Patent- In a lamp-support of the extensible hind described, the combination of the ixed and extensible tubes a g, the stuffing-boxes provided with clamping-screws, the transverse tube h, connecting the lower ends of the tubes g, the shade B, the supports A A therefor on said tube h, and the burner between said supports, all substantially as and for the purL poses described.
