JOHN HUGHES, OF NEW BERNE, NORTH CAROLINA.
Letters Patent No. 99,901, dated February 15, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN ATTACHMENT FOR LAMP-CHIMNEYS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same To all whom c't may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN HUGHES, of New Berne, in the county of Graven, and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Perforated Glass Chimneys and Globes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation .of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a front view-of my perforated chimney.
Figure 2 is a central vertical section of the same.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the belt and stop.
Figures 4 and 5 show the manner of attaching the reflectors or shades.
My invention relates to lamp-chimneys that are perforated for the purpose of lighting the lamp, and consists mainly in constructing and arranging therewith a spring band or collar adapted to hold the standard of a reflector or shade, togetherwith a spring and button adapted for opening or closing the aperture in the chimney at will.
The letter A of the drawings designates my lamp chimney, having the aperture B formed therein near the bottom and opposite the upper end of the wicktube.
I do not confine myself to any particular size or shape, but design usually to make this aperture a littleless-than one-half inch in diameter. I may make it of any form, circular or elliptical, and in any manner, whether. by cutting, blowing, punching, or molding, or by whatever method will accomplish the object in the mostsatisfactory manner.
' To close this opening, a button or stop, c, arranged with a central projection, s, to fit into the opening, and a rim or flanch, t, is employed. This button. may be made of metal, glass, talc, or any other suit-able material, and is attached to the spring e, which is pivoted to the spring-belt or collar D, arranged to'encircle the base of the chimney. One end of the spring-collar D is arranged to slide in a loop attached to the other end, in such a manner as to render the belt adjustable to a chimney of any size,
By means of the spring e the button 0 is kept in position to close the aperture in thechimney. When it is desired to light the lamp thebutton is moved to one side, and a lighted match or taper introduced through the aperture. The lamp may also beextinguished by blowingthrough the opening.
Sometimes I propose to attach reflectors or shades to the chimney by connecting the standards thereof with the spring-belt or collar D, arranging 'thefasten ing in such a manner that when desired thereliector may be readily detached.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'- I The spring-band or collar D, provided with the button '0, spring 0, and socket for the support of a reflect or, in con'ibination with the perforated chimney, substantiallyas and forthe purposes specified.
-In' testimony-that I claim the above, I have hereunto subscribed my name, in the presence of two witnesses.
' J NO. HUGHES. Witnesses:
' JAMES E. NASH,
E. M. WILLIAMS.
