HENRY G. YERBY, OF LESLIE, MI-CH-IGAN.H+
Letters Patent No. 91,192, dated June 8, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN LANTERNS.
The Schedule referred. to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Y Be it known that I, HENRY G. YERBY, of Leslie, in the county of Ingham, and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lanterns; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference and, to this end,
, It consists in the employment of an inner and outer cylinder, the outer cylinder being perforated with holes, and provided with perforated slides, while the inner cylinder is so attached to the outer cylinder as to separate the two rows of holes, thereby forming two curtents of air, one below, to supply the flame, and one above, to prevent the shade, or glass from smoking.
To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention'appertains, to make and use the same, I will now describe its construction and operation.
In the accompanying drawingsa represents the base of the lantern, upon which is secured the receptacle b, for the lamp A. This lamp has its wick-tube surrounded by the perforated case a, as seen in the drawing.
4 b represents a cylinder,.perforated, around'its lower circumference, with two rows of holes, a c, 11 d.
c' is the inner cylinder, formed with a flange, 0, around its lower edge, by which it is secured to the outer cylinder 7), between the two rows of holes 0' c, d d, in order that when the air enters the said holes, there may be two distinct currents, one through the lower row, to supply the flame, and one through the upper row, passing up against the sides of the shade, or glass, preventing the same from smoking.
(1 is a perforated slide, working over the holes 0 c, d d, to regulate the current.
e is the screw for operating the wick; and
c, a slot formed in the inner cylinder, to hold the lamp in its receptacle.
B represents the shade, or chimney, attached to the outer cylinder, in the usual manner, by the springs a. a".
The upper end of the chimney is also provided with an inner and outer cylinder, f g, the outer cylinder, g, being provided with perforations, g g, and. perforated slide, g. t
f is the top of the lantern, formed with holes for the escape of the smoke, and provided with a cover, h, to prevent rain, &c., from entering the lantern.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is.-
1. The" cylinder b", constructed 'with two rows of holes, c c, d (1', and provided with slide (1, in combination with the inner cylinder 0, all arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The cylinder b, constructed as described, perforated slide (1, and cylinder 0, in combination with cylinders f and y, and slide y all constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I aflix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY O. YERBY.
