Description

H. W. HAYDEN. Lamp Burner.
l new song To all whom it may. concern:
HIRAM W. HAYDEN,'OF WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO HOLMES} BOOTH &, HAYDENS, or SAME PLACE. a
Letters Patent No. 97,773, dated December 14, 1869;
LAMP.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
Be it known that I, HIRAM W. HAYnEN, of Water bury, in the county of New Haven, and State of Oon-, necticuithave invented an Improvement in Lamps;
and I hereby declare the following to be a correct description of the same.
The object of this invention is to simplify the construction of lamps, and render them more durable and strong, and less costly.
The lamps heretofore constructed, of this class, are made with the different parts united by lips and flanges that are difiicult to make and put together, and are liable to beconie injured in use, especially from the strain of screwing the burner upon the reservoir.
- My invention relates to a cylindrical air-distributer, with a guide-socket at the lower end, and a flange projecting to receive thechimney liolder and springs, the said cylinder,guide-socket, andflange beingmade outof one piece of metal, pressed up by dies, so as l to lessen cost and make a better article.
In the drawing- Figure 1 is a veltical and Figure 2 is an inverted plan of the upperv and removable portion of the burner.
a is the wick-tube, passing through the cap I), thain is adaptedto being screwed upon the fountain, and
section of my improve d lamp,
contains the wick-raiser c.
The cylinder (Z is peit'orated with numerous small holes, andforms the air-distributer.
At the bottom is the flange e, to which the chimney-holder or springs fare riveted; and within the lower end of this cylinder d is the guide-socket g; and
at, the top of the cylinder (1 is the compound dome 71 i, the portion it having the flame-slot, and the portion '5 being made with notches 0 around its edge, to admit 7 air between the dome and chimney.
The cylinder (1 is pressed-up in dies to the shape,
or, nearly so, shown in Figure3; then the flange is made by spreading the metal and shaping the socket,
.as in'Figure 4.
[strong at the part most exposed to injury from the strain in screwing the burner upon the rescrvoir,.0r
lifting off the upper portion of the burner for trimming or lighting.
I claim, as my invention- 1.- The perforated cylinder (1, and guide-socket, made of one piece of metal, and removable fromthe wick-tube, as and for the purposes specified.
2. The perforated cylinder d, flange c, and guidesocket, in combination with the chimney-holder, attached to the flange e, as set forth:
3. The perforated cylinder d,-guide-socket g, flange e, and chimney-holder f, made as specified, in combination with the compound dome h i, with flame-slot and notches o o, as and for the purposes set forth.
Signed by me, this 1st day. of October, A. D. 1869.
