Description

H. H. SWIFT. Mode ofAttaching-Ch'mneys to Lamps. N6. 37,366. Patented Jany 6, 1863.
iINITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY H. SWIFT, OF HARTS VILLAGE, NEW YORK.
IMPROVED MODE OF ATTACHING CHIMNEYS TO LAMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 37,366, dated January 6, 1863.
To all whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY H. SWIFT, of Harts Village, in the county of Dutchess and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Attaching Chimneys to Lamp-Burners 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specication, in which- Figure l is a vertical section of a lampburner with my invention applied to it; Fig. 2,- a plan or top View of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts in the two figures.
The object of this invention is to obtain a lsimple and eflicient fastening for securing chimneys to 'lamp-burners, one which will yield or give as the chimney expands under the heat from the iiame, so as to prevent the chimney from fracturing, and one also which will admit 0f the ,chimney being readily adjusted to the burner and detached therefrom.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it. 4
A represents a lamp-burner, which may be constructed in the ordinary way, B being the wick-tube; C the cone or deiector, andD the ange within which the base of the chimney is fitted.
E is a spring constructed of a thin plate of any suitable metal, and bent in bow form, as shownclearly in Fig. 2. This spring passes horizontally through holes or openings a a in the ange D, and has its ends permanently secured to the ange at points b b, which are opposite tothe holes or openings a a, as shown clearly in Fig. 2. Thisspring E is of such a form that its sides c c within the dangeDWill catch over the liange at the base of the chimney and retain it firmly on the burner, and by pressing the outer part of the spring E inward or toward the burner the sides c c will be forced outward and from the ange of the chimney, as shown in red in Fig. 2, thereby releasing the chimney, so that it may be re moved from the burner. The sides c c of the spring E are to be sufliciently elastic to yield l
