NITEDQ STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RODNEY L. SMITH, OF WEST MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO PARKERS, SNOW & 00., OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVED LAMP-BURNER.
Specification forming partof Letters Patent No. 4 l,965, dated March 15, 1861.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, R. L. SMITH, of West Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lamp-Burners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figures 1 and 2 are side elevations of a lampburner with my improvement applied to it; Fig. 3, a side elevation of the same with the cone or deflector raised or in an elevated state; Fig. 4, a detached inverted plan of the cone or deflector.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to an improvement in that class of lamp-burners which are provided with a draft-chimney, and have their cones or deflectors attached to the burner by a hinge to admit of the cone or deflector, with the chimney attached, being turned over or back to expose the wick-tube for trimming and lighting without the trouble of removing or detaching the chimney from the burner.
The invention consists in the employment or use of a fastening, hinge, and stop, constructed, arranged, and applied to the burner in such a manner that the cone or deflector may be firmly secured down upon the burner, a hinge attachment for the cone or deflector obtained, and also a stop to prevent the cone or deflector being thrown or turned back he- -yond a certain position, the parts being all constructed out of a single piece of wire, as
hereinafter fully described.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A represents the body or main portion of a lamp-burner, which may be constructed in the form generally adopted for coal oil burners. B is the cone or deflector, which may also be of the usual form.
To the under side of the base a of the cone or deflector there is attached by solder or otherwise, as shown at b b, a wire rod, 0, which is bent at its center, so as to form two parts, 0 c, of equal length. Each part c has a curved or semicircular portion, d, which extends around the inner edge of the base a of the cone or deflector, and the outer parts, 6 e, of said portions d project from the semicircular portions d about at'right angles, and pass through aloop or guide, f, at the under side of the base, as shown. in Fig. 4.. The opposite ends of the parts 0 c at the bend are formed with a loop-shaped projection, g, which is bent or curved a trifle downward, a straight portion, it, being at each side of the projection g, the portions It being at right angles with portions 1', which adjoin the inner ends of the curved portions (2, as shown clearly in Fig. 4. The. parts 0 c of the rod C are springs, and they have a tendency to keep the parts 6 c in contact with the ends of the loop or guide f.
To the upper edge of the body or main portion A of the burner there is attached a plate, D, having two eyes,j j, through which the portions h h of the rod C pass, so as to form a hinge for the cone or deflector, the projection 9 serving as a stop to prevent the cone or deflector being thrown back beyond a vertical position, the projection g striking against the edge of the upper part of A when the cone or deflector is thus adjusted. (See Fig. 3.)
WVhen the cone or deflector is turned down upon the body A, the portions 6 6 pass within a T-shaped slot, is, made in the upper edge of A, which, in connection with the portions 6 6, form a fastening or catch for the cone or deflector. cone or deflector, the parts 6 e are simply pressed toward each other, so as to be free from the ends of the slot k, and the cone or deflector may then be raised.
Thus it will be seen that by means of the "wire or rod 0, bent and attached to the under side. of the base a, as shown, a hinge, stop,"
and fastening for the cone or deflector are obtained, and a very cheap and durable burner of the class specified is produced.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new. and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The wire or rod C, attached to the under side of the base a of the cone or deflector, and bent so as to form a hinge, stop, and a catch or fastening, substantially as herein shown and described.
RODNEY L. SMITH.
