Description
E. B. REQUA.
Lamp Cone.
No. 41,092. Patented Jan. 5, 1864.
UNITED STATES ATENT FFICE E. B. REQUA, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAM P-CONES.
Specification forming partof Letters Patent No. 4 I ,09'1, dated January 5, 1864.
T0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, E. B. RE UA, of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cones or Deflectors t'or Lamp- Barners; and I do hereby declare that the fillowing is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accomplnying drawings, making a part ofthis specification, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical central section of my invention, taken in the line as m, Fig. 2; Fig. 2, an elevation of the same; Fig. 3, a plan or t)p view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
This invention consists in providing the mile or deflector with wings and a slot or opening of peculiar form, as hereinafter fully siown and described, whereby free access is allowed the air to the sides of the upper part of the wick and the latter allowed to burn uniformly or evenly entirely across its whole upper end and with abroad plane.
To-enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, Twill proceed to describe it.
A represents the upper part of the cone or deflector, constructed of metal, and attached to a transparent or translucent base, B, which may be of glass, porcelain, or other similar material. This transparent or translucent The whole may be of metal, if
ward in opposite directions at its sides, the lower parts of the slot at each side of the cone being enlarged, as shown at b, and somewhat curved, as shown clearly in Figs. 1. and 3.
Each side of the slot or opening a at its lower ends is spread atrifle outward, forming small wings, as shown at 0, so as to catch the air and deflect it into the cone through the lower ends of the slot or opening, which extend nearly or quite to the lower end of A, as,
shown clearly in Figs. 1 and 3.
From the above description it will be seen that the wick will be exposed to the air at each side of its upper end and an even and broad flame produced.
The small wings or plates 0 I do not consider indispensably necessary, but still an advantage. When not employed, a. very great improvement is obtained over the old cone or deflector by the use of the slot or opening 0., arranged as described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The slot to b, extendingstraight across the apex ot the cone and obliquely downward in opposite directions at the sides, all as represented and described.
2. The wings cc, constructedand operating as specified.
3. The described combination of the. peculiarly-shaped slot a b and wingsc c, for the purpose set forth.
E. B. REQUA.
