Description

8. MARSHAL-L.
I Lamp Burner.
Patented Aug. 19, 1862.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFF CE.
SAMUEL MARSHALL, OF WVILMINGTON, DELAWARE.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAMPS}.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 36,226, dated August 19, 1862.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, SAMUEL MARSHALL, of Wilmington, in the county of New Castle and v State of Delaware, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lamps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,
. and exact description of the same, reference Fig. 2, indicating the plane of section,.whic his at right angles to the plane of section Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre-. sponding parts in the several figures.
This invention consists in adapting, by a simple contrivance, an ordinary fluid-lamp to the burning of coal-oil without a chimney, and by such a means that will admit of being adjusted to, suit the height of the wick-tube, and be capable of being manufactured and sold separately and applied to any ordinary fluidlamp in use.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A represents an ordinary fluid-lamp; B, the cap; and O, the wicktube, which is of theordiarxof nary cylindrical form. These parts, being common and well known, do not require a minute descriptiom D represents what may be termed a supplemental cap, which is of semi-spherical form and slotted at its upper convex end, as shown also. This supplemental cap encompasses the upper end of the wick-tube O, and it is attached to a curved metal plate, E, the lower end of which is fitted on the wick-tube and rests on the top of the cap B proper of the lamp A. The upper end of the plate E is in a horizontal position, and it forms a bottom for the supplemental cap D, two recesses or notches, b b, being made in it, and also in the lower edge of D, one at each side, to admit air into D.
By straightening or bending the plate E the supplemental cap D may be raised or lowered to suitthe height of the wick-tube G, and therefore admit of D being adjusted in a proper relative position with the top of the wick-tube O. This is an important feature of the invention, for it admits ofthe supplemental cap being made and sold separately without reference to the dimension or style of the lamp to which it may be applied. The upper horizontal part of the plate E is provided with a hole to admit of the wick-tubeO passingthrou gh the plate, and the supplemental, cap D, therefore, is supported and retained in proper po sition by the wick-tube, the-former being pre- Vented from moving or shifting laterally out of its proper place. i
The supplemental cap D,it will be seen, causes a draft or current of air to be supplied to the flame, as indicated by the arrows in Figs. 1 and 3, and a draft-chimney, therefore, isdispensed with.
The invention may be applied to a flatwicktube with equally as good results as to a round wick-tube, and, if necessary, two plates or supports, E, may .be used, instead of one; but
for wick tubes of ordinarysizeone plate, E, will be sufficient.
This invention has been practically tested and has been found to answer admirably well, especially when the lamp is stationary. If the latter is moved about, the flame will flicker some and smoke a trifle, but not sufficiently to be an annoyance.
I do not claim, broadly, the application of the supplemental cap D'to the wick-tube 0;
but
I do claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The attaching of the supplemental cap D to the lamp by means of one or more curved or bent plates, E, arranged, as shown, so as to support the cap D and admit of its being adjusted higher or lower to suit the height of the wick-tube and at the same time admit of the wick-tube passing through it at its upper part to prevent any lateral movement or shifting of the cap, as and for the purpose herein set forth. I
SAMUEL MARSHALL. Witnesses:
J. H. JACKSON, JOHN T. RoBINsoN.
