Description
E C. BLAKESLEE.
Lamp Chimney Holder.
Patented Dec. 2. 1862 N. PETERS. Pholo-Limqgra mr. Winhingiofl. ac.
- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD C. BLAKESLEE, OF VVATERBURY, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO HOLMES, BOOTH, & HAYDEN, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAMPS Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 37,068, dated December 2, 1862.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD O. BLAKES- LEE, of \Vaterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, haveinvented, made, and applied to use a certain new and useful Improvement in Lamps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the said invention, refereuce being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, wherein- Figure l is a vertical section of my said improvement, and Fig. 2 is a plan of the same.
Similar marks of reference denote the same parts.
The nature of my said invention consists in abent lever having its fulcrum on the cap that carries the glass chimney, and acted upon by a spring in such a manner that the chimney is retained within its ring or support by means of said bent lever, or can be easily lib erated from the same by pressing back this spring-lever.
In the drawings, a is the cap, that is screwed upon any suitable reservoir containing the liquid to be burned. This cap rises in the usual manner to the ring I), for the glass chimney c, and d is the ordinary deflector, with an opening over the wick-tube 0. These parts, being of any known construction, do not require further explanation.
g is my bent lever, passing through a mortise in a, at which pointit forms a fulcrum. 1, for said lever. The upper end of my bent lever is of a shape adapted to take over the flange of the glass chimney c, and the end forms a thumb-piece, so that the lever can be moved to liberate the chimney when required.
In order to keep my bent lever to the chimney, Iemploy a spring acting at the inner end of said lever. I have shown the spring h as attached to the wicktube e and cap a, and acting upon the short inner arm of my said bent lever 9, but it will be apparent that this spring may be made as a part of theinner end of this lever, as shown in the detached view, Fig. 3, or otherwise applied so as to press the lever to the glass chimney. This means for holding on the chimneyis strong and durable. At the same time it will yield as the chimney expands under the action of the heat of the flame, and not break the glass, as often occurs where a screw is employed.
6 6 are cars on the ring I), to hold the chimney on the opposite side to the spring-lever 9.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The bent lever g on the fulcrum l and actuated by a spring, as set forth, in combination with the flanged chimney c and ring or holder 1), for the purposes and as specified.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my signature this 7th day of July, 1862.
EDWARD C. BLAKESLEE.
