Description

-C. W. CA'HOON.
Lamp Chimney Holder.
Patented Sept. 16., A186.2.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES W. CAHOON, OF PORTLAND, MAINE.
i IMPROVEMENT IN LAMPS.
Specilcation forming part of Letters Patent No. 36,451, datcd September 16, 1862.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, CHARLEs W. CAHooN, oi Portland, in the county of Cumberland and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Construction of Lamps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of my said invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l represents a side elevation of a lamp embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 represents a plan of the grooved clamp-support, and Fig. 4 represents a vertical section of thegrooved clamp-support at the line x w of Fig. 3.
In a previous 'patent granted to me I described the combination of a vibratable chimney-holder fitted with chimney-fastenings and a clamp-support, by means of which combination a vibratable chimney-holder fitted with chimney-fasteni-ngs for securing an independent glass chimney can be attached to a lamp. This combination is now known in the market as Cahoons attachment for kerosene-lamps,77 and the invention which is the subject-matter of this patent is an improvement in the clampsupport and its combination with the lamp.
The lamp heads or burners,7 as they are sometimes called, of kerosene-lamps are frequently made with a projecting rim, and the object of the first part of my invention is to take advantage of this rim in securing the clamp-support. To this end thispart of my invention consists in a grooved clamp-support for the chimney-holder of a lamp, the construction of the clamp support being such that When it is applied to the rim of the llamp-head and clamped fast thereto the mutual engagement of the rim and groove prevents the upward or downward movement of the support without other means of fastening than the clamping of the clamp-support.
The second part of my invention consists in the combination of the said grooved clampsupport with the lamphead.
The lamp-head A of the lamp represented in the accompanying drawings is constructed to screw into the collar at the neck of the lamp-body B, and it has a projecting rim, e, to which thegrooved clampsupport C is applied. This clamp-support has the form of an open ring with an arm, d, to hold the pivot of a vibratable chimney-holder, E. It is fitted with a clampscrew, f, by screwing which the ring can be tightened so as to clamp the whole fast to the rim of the lamp-head, and the interior of the ring part is grooved, as shown in section at a, Fig. 4. Hence, when the clamp support is applied to the rim of the lamphead and the clamp-screw is tightened, the engagement of the rim of the lamp-head in the groove of the support prevents the movement of the clamp-support upward or downward upon the lamp-head.
The above-described construction may be varied without changing the invention, substantially, by transposing the rim Yand the groove, making the former on the ring of the clamp-support and the latter on the lamphead. A rimmed clamp-support becomes in this manner the equivalent of a grooved clampsupport for the useful results which are obtained by this construction of the clamp-support.
The vibratable chimney-holder, that is represented as combined with the clamp-support in the accompanying drawings, is fitted with a thumb-plate, h, which should be in a convenient position to be operated by the thumb when the hand is applied to the lamp-handle J. Hence, when applying this form of lamp attachmentto a handled lamp, the clamp-screw f should not be tightened until the lamp-head is screwed fast and the thumb-plate h is placed in the right position over the lamp-handle J. When once adjusted to this position and clamped, the thumb-plate will always be returned to this position by screwing the lamphead into place after it has been unscrewed.
I do not claim in this patent the combination of a vibratable chimneyholder with, a clampsuppornor the application of this combination to the burner of alamp, -as both these are described in a preceding patent granted to me; but
What I claim as my invention in this patent is 1. A grooved clamp support for a vibratable chimney-holder, substantiallyas set forth.
2. The combination of a grooved clampsupport With a rimmed lamp-head, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereoi` I have hereunto set my hand this 6th day of August, 1862.
CHAS. YW. CAHOON.
