Description

vE. BOWEN.
Lamp Chimney Holder No. 33,875. Patented Dec. 10, 1861.
N PETERS. Plzummhogmphr. wnshmgmn. D. CA
A UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDVIN BOWEN, OF IWIERIDEN, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN MODES OF SECURING CHIMNEYS TO LAMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 33,875, dated December 10, 1861.
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN BOWEN, oi' Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Securing Chimneys to Lamp- Tops; and I do hereby declare that the following isa full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a vertical section of' a lamp-top with my improvement applied to it, or m, Fig. 2, indicating the plane of section; and Fig 2, a plan or top view of the same with the cone removed.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two igures.
The objectof this invention is to obtain a fastening or catch which will admit of the chimney being readily adjusted on the lamptop, and also readily detached therefrom, the fastening or catch at the same time being capable of firmly securing the chimney to the lamp-top.
The invention consist-s in the employment or use of a slide placed horizontally in the lamp-top and provided at one end with a hook or catch, the slide having a spring applied to it near its center, and all substantially as hereinafter shown and described.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention I will proceed to describe it.
A represents a lamp-top, which may be constructed in any of the forms now used for chimney-lamps.
B is the wick-tube, and C is the cone or dehector.
D is a slide which is placed horizontally in the lamp-top A and has its ends passing through the side of the top A. One end ofthe slide D is bent in the form of a hook a and extends over the edge of the lamp-top and is then bent obliquely upward, as shown at b. (See Fig. l.) The upper edge of the lamptop is notched, as shown at c, to admit of the hook a working or sliding over it a short distance below the other parts of the edge.
The central part of the slide D is of annular form, as shown at cX in Fig. 2.
nular part cX encompasses the wick-tube B, and it is made suflciently large in diameter to admit of a requisite movement or play of the slide D.
E is a spring, one end of which is attached to the wick-tube B. The opposite end of this spring bears against the slide D and has a tendency to keep the hook a of the slide inward to its fullest extent toward the cone or deflect-or C, as indicated by the arrow in Fig. 1.
The chimney, which is indicated by dotted lines in Fig. l, has the usual flange at its bottom, and when said chimney is pressed down on the top A the catch a will be forced outward in consequence of the bottom of the chimney acting upon the oblique part b at the end of hook a, and the chimney is thereby allowed to descend to the base of the cone or deflector C, on which base it rests, the spring E drawing the hook a over the flange of the chimney as soon as the flange passes below the part b.
The hook, it will be seen, firmly secures the chimney on the lamp-top, the spring E causing it to press snugly against the chimney just over the flange of the latter, the iiange at the Opposite side tting under lips d d, which project from the inner side of the lamp-top. In order to release the chimney or detach it from the lamp-top A, all that is required is simply to press the thumb or finger against a button e at the end of the slide opposite to that where the hook a is formed, in order to throw out the hook d, free from the iiange of the chimney.
The advantage of this fastening or catch is that the slide D admits of a horizontal movement of the hook a, and the latter is consequently allowed to work easily or freely, far more so than the ordinary spring catch hitherto used. The invention also admits of the chimney being more easily released from the la1np-top than hitherto, and the device, it is believed, is not so liable to become deranged by use orinj ured by wear as those constructed on the old plan.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The slide D, fitted horizontally in the lamptop A, provided with a hook d at one end, and having a spring E bearing or acting against it within the top, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
EDWIN BOWEN. I/Vtnesses:
