IMPROVEMENT IN CAN DLESTICKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 166,651, dated August 10, 1875; application filed June 28, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS SWANN, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Candlesticks, of which the following is a specification My invention relates to certain improvements in that class of candlesticks' in which the candle, as it is consumed, is gradually fed upward by the action of a spring; and the main objects of my invention are to protect the lower end of the tube which encases the feeding-spring, and to provide for the ready introduction and removal of the latter.
These objects I attain in the manner which I will now proceed to describe, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in Which Figure l is a vertical section of a candlestick with my improvements, and Fig. 2 an inverted plan view of the same.
The drawing shows my invention applied to the usual spring candlestick, A representing the tubular stem for receiving the candle; B, the ornamental base; and D, the retainingcap, the latter being provided at the lower edge with. a flange, a, which fits over and is retained in position by lugs on the tubular stem A. This stem extends downward through the ornamental base B, and its lower end receives the spring F, the upper end of the latter being adapted to the inverted cup b, on which rests the bottom of the candle.
The usual mode of retaining this spring is by means of a screw-cap adapted to the lower end of the tubular stem A, but as the base of the candles tick is usually open at the bottom,
the projecting end of the stem and its screwcap are very liable to be bent and otherwise injured. To obviate this I attach to the base of the candlestick a cast-metal ring, H, which is secured at its outer edge to the bottom flange of the base, and near its inner edge to the lower end of the tubular stem A, as shown in Fig. 1. The central opening (I of the ring H has two opposite recesses, e e, and the lower end of the spring F bears upon a plate, f, which is of larger diameter than the opening d, so that when it is flat, as shown in Fig. 1, it affords a firm bearing for the spring; but when turned on edge, as shown in Fig. 2, it can be readily removed through the recesses 6, thus allowing the spring to be removed. The ring H has a roughened portion, h, for the ignition of matches.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination of the tubular stem A and base B of a spring candlestick with a cast-metal ring or plate, H, secured to the base and to the tube, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the plate f, forn1ing a bearing for the lower end of the spring, with the central opening 01 of the ring H and its recesses e e.
