Description

E. S. DRAKE.
Lamp.
No. 197,109. Patented Nov. 13, 1877'.
KKK
N.PETERs. FHOTO-UTHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON. u C
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWIN S. DRAKE, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAM PS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 197,109, dated November 13, 1877; application filed October 25, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN S. DRAKE, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact. description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this'specification.
The nature of my invention consists in certain improvements upon night-lamps, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawing, to which reference is made, and which fully illustrates my invention, Figure 1 is a vertical section of a nightlamp embodying myinvention. Figs. 2 and 3 represent side elevations of modifications of the same. Figs. 4, 5, and 6 represent variout details of my invention.
A represents the base or reservoir of the lamp, formed with a flange or collar, a, on the top around the central orifice. B is the burner, and O the wick-tube, of this class of lamps. The lower half of the burner B is constructed in such a manner as to form a socket, b, through the center of which passes the wicktube, and on said tube is then placed and fastened a cork or other elastic plug, D, while the sides of the socket are extended downward to hide the plug, and appear like an ordinary collar. The plug D is inserted within theflange a, forming a tight joint, while the lower portion of the burner or socket fits around the same down upon the reservoir.
The advantages of this construction area savin g in the construction and perfect prevention of overflow of oil by closing the top of the fount with an elastic plug.
The cost of the usual collar, the cutting of a male and a female screw to unite the collar and burner, and the cost of cementing the collar upon the lamp are saved, while the cost of the burner is not increased.
G represents the shade orwind-guard of the night-lamp. This is, atits lower end, provided with a metallic rim, 1), having upwardly-projecting ears a a, for fastening the same to the shade. The rim 1) is also provided with a slotted ear, d, and on each side thereof it has a downwardly-projecting lip, e, as shown.
The slotted ear 61 forms a part of a hinge to connect the shade to an arm or standard, H, which is formed at its lower end with a tube or socket, h, to fit on the upper portion of the wick-tube G. The standard H is curved outward, as shown, and its upper end formed with the bends i, to form rests for the ear (1 of the shade-rim I), for the purpose of holding the shade directly over the upper end of the Wick-tube. On the sides of the arm H are projections m m, upon which the lips c c catch, to hold the shade firmly in position and pre vent the same from slipping. The standard H is also removable from the wick-tube for cleaning or other purposes; but such standard may be permanent standard, if desired, such standard then rising from the top of the burner.
I do not claim, broadly, holding the burner upon the lamp by means of an elastic plug or bushing.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a lamp, the burnerB, having its lower end forming a socket, b, for inclosing an elastic plug, D, to form the connection with the lamp reservoir, substantially as herein set forth.
2. The combination of the reservoir A with flange a, the burner B, forming the socket b, the wick-tube O, and the elastic plug D, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
3. In a night-lamp, the shade provided with a metallic rim removably hinged to astandard connected to the wick-tube, substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDWIN S. DRAKE.
Witnesses G. H. BOUTON, B. B. SCHNEIDER.
