PATENT ()FFICE.
HOWARD P. NICHOLS, OF READING, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.
205,203, dated June 25, 1878; application filed May 23, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOWARD P. NICHOLS, of Reading, in the county of MiddleseX and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamps, of which the following is a specification:
This invention relates to means for arresting the flow of the contents of a lamp from the interior over upon the outside; and it consists in the employment of a shallow cup or saucer disposed about or immediately below the burn er or filling-orifice, and above the neck of the lamp, as hereinafter explained.
The drawing accompanyin g this specification is a sectional elevation of a lamp embodying my invention.
In this drawing, A represents the stand or pedestal, andB the bowl or oil-reservoir, of a lamp, while C is the neck, which contains the orifice into which the burner is screwed.
1n carrying out my invention, I dispose above the bowl or oil-reservoir B a saucer or shallow cup, D, which is cast or formed integral with such reservoir, and is situated about or immediately below the neck C, in order to instantly arrest any oil or fluid which creeps upon the outside of the burner or the neck C and tends to run down upon the outside of the lamp.
I am aware that a ledge or wall has heretofore been raised about the edge of the reservoir B to arrest flow of oil; but the top of the reservoir is, in this instance, usually covered with oil. With my saucer arranged above the reservoir and immediately below the burner I prevent the contents of the lamp from getting access to the top of the reservoir.
I am also aware that an annular cup has heretofore been used, which is independent of the reservoir, and has a hole in its center to receive the exterior of the neck C, this annular cup in use resting upon the top of the reservoir. My improved saucer difi'ers from the annulus in that itis raised considerably above the reservoir and is formed integral therewith.
I am also aware that a lamp has been made with a dish-like plate around the wick-tube; but this in itself was small, and with a bottom so sloping as to be practically inefficient to prevent the oil from passing over its edge. Moreover, it was a part of the burner and not of the reservoir, and was located thereon at a point above that at which the burner was screwed into the reservoir.
I claim-- The saucer or cup D, raised above the oilreservoir and situated immediately below or about the neck C, and cast or formed integral with the said reservoir, substantially as and for purposes stated.
