J OHN W. KIRKPATRICK, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
PACKAGE FOR oooos.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 515,881, dated March 6, 1894.
Application filed March 29, 1893. Serial No. 468,156. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN W. KIRKPATRICK,
' of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packages for containing receptacles of suitable form for the reception of the bottles or other articles to be placed in the package. These two parts are to be placed with their faces toward each other, around these two parts is to be placed a rim of paper,-paste-board or other suitable material of a width substantially equal to the depth of the two parts when placed together, and over this may be placed for greater security a cover like a box without a top, that is, a piece having a bottom and sides, but no top, the whole being suitably fastened. The rim is not to be attached to the package, but is a separate piece, fitting tightly over the box so as to hold the parts in position, but capable of being readily removed and of being again put upon the box.
I design to use my invention also as a display stand, as well. as a package, for the purpose of exhibiting the bottles or other goods contained therein, in which case the cover and rim would be dispensed with and the two parts united by double hinges; so that when the two partsare put together with their faces toward each other, a complete box is formed, and when it is opened, the two parts may be turned with the faces outward. In this waya display stand is produced without the use of any supporting piece, and both parts are available for display purposes.
In the drawings I have shown in Figure 1, plan views of the two parts into which the bottles to be packed are placed; in Fig. 2, a similar view of the rim; in Fig. 3, a longitudinal section of my package, and in Fig. 4, a
perspective view of my invention when used as a display stand, the two parts a, and b, united by means of double hinges, being opened outward and placed upright so as to show the contentsl a, and b, are the two parts into which botties or other goods are to be placed, and having therein the places 0, c, for holding the same.
01, is the rim.
2, is the cover.
f, is the hinge uniting the two parts when used as a display stand.
What Iclaim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The improved package composed of two parts made of paper-pulp or other suitable material, each part containing receptacles for the reception of bottles, or other articles, in combination with a separate rim'piece, fitting tightly over the package so as to hold the two parts together, and capable of being readily removed therefrom, substantially as, and for the purpose above described.
2. The improved package composed of two parts made of paper-pulp or other suitable material, each part containing receptacles for the reception of bottles, or other articles, in combination with a separate rim-piece, fitting tightly over the package so as to hold the two parts together, and capable of being readily removed therefrom; and a cover-piece fitting over the top and sides of the package and which may easily be taken off, substantially as, and for the purpose above described. 3. The improved package composed of two parts made of paper-pulp or other suitable material, each part containing receptacles for the reception of bottles, or other articles; united by double hinges so that the parts may be opened outward, substantially as, and for the purpose above described.
' JOHN *W. KIRKPATRICK.
