UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN BROOKS, OF PLAINFIELD, NEW JERSEY.
BOTTLE-8T0 PPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 51 1,1 14, dated December 19, 1893.
Application filed November 5, 1892. Serial No. 451,088. (No model.)
. is connected to a lever secured to the neck of the bottle.
The present improvements are directed to the manner of connecting the stopper or cap to the bail so that the stopper is prevented from moving laterally along the bail and so render the stopper more easily adj usted over the mouth of the bottle. In prior devices, designed to efiect this result, it has been proposed to divide the journal portion of the bail in two separate portions by forming the center bar of the bail with a central bend or enlargement which required a similar recess both in the stopper and in the securing plate to accommodate such bend or enlargement and permit the stopper to rotate with respect to the bail. This central bend formed no part of the journal but simply provided an obstruction to the lateral movement of the bail with respect to the stopper, the journals being on the unbent portion of the bail. In such device also the downward strain of the bail upon the stopper naturally tended to start its center-bar bending at the point the central bend merged into the straight portion of the bar, that is to say, within its hearing, and as this point and the adjacent portions of the center-bar were confined by the bearing formed by the stopper and securing plate the tendency was to force the securing plate from its soldered fastening.
The object of this improvement is to improve and simplify the connection between the stopper and the bail and to render the connection more secure.
The accompanying drawings show the improvements in connection with a portion of a bottle, in which drawings- Figure 1 is a plan view. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 2, 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3, is a similar section on the line 3, 3 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is an elevation of a portion of the bail showing the stopper partially rotated on the bail.
The improved stopper B is shown in connection with a bottle or jar A the neck only of which is delineated. The stopper consists preferably of a sheet of metal stamped to the desired shape to provide a flange cto rest on the upper edge of the bottle, with a depression 01 to fit slightly within the mouth of the bottle and with a central raises to forma seat and a portion of the bearing for the bail F. The bail F is generally made of wire bent to provide a center bar 9, and two downhanging bars h, which are connected to the usual lever I that is supported in any proper manner by a wire j secured around the neck of the bottle. The'center bar of the bailFisformed with a central bend or depressed portion 7a, merging into the straight or unhent portion of the bar by sharp bends 1 which in effect provide a shoulder on each side of the portion it. This depressed portion It forms the journal of the bail thus bounded on both sides by shoulders made by the sharp bends Z; and this portion of the journal is held in a hearing an formed by the top of the central raise e and a securing plate n secured to the raise e by solder or otherwise. This bearing an is better formed by forming a groove in the top of the raise e and in the underside of the securing plate at, which embrace the entire length of the journal portion is of the bail. The securing plate nis substantially the same width as the raise a and the length of the journal portion It, so that the edge of said plate and the wall of the raise both form barriers to meet the shoulders made by the sharp bends Z and prevent the center bar of the hail from moving laterally to one side or the other through the bearingm. Thejournal portion 7a of the bail is only bent out of line with the remainder of the center bar suflicient to form shoulders to confine the bail against lateral displacement with respect to the stopper B and hence the remainder or high part of the the upper surface of the stopper than the journal portion 70, sufficient space is left to permit the bar to bend downward as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 2.
From the foregoing it will be understood that the central depression in the center bar of the bail acts as the journal proper, and that the bearing therefor embraces the entire length of this central depression or journal and in this respect the connection between the stopper and bail differs entirely from the 20 prior devices before mentioned.
What is claimed is The herein described connected stopper and hail, the stopper whereof is provided with the I central bearing, m having the close fitting covering cap or plate a and the bail whereof is formed with a central journal portion 7a terminated at each end by the sharp upward bends I which form shoulders to the journal and elevate the arms of the bail, and which are situated outside of said central bearing, as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN BROOKS.
