BOTTLE S-TOPPEIL,
APPLICATION FILED MAR. 13, 1902.
H0 MODEL.
UNME STATES Patented May 5, 1903 BOTTLE-STOPPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 727,388, dated May 5, 1903.
Application filed March 13,1902. Serial No. 98,101. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM B. LANGAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hawley,in the county of WVayne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Botlie-Stopper, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in bottle-stoppers.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of bottle-stoppers and to provide a simple, inexpensive, and efiicient one designed more especially for bottling carbonated drinks or beverages and adapted to be readily applied to a hinged bail in such manner that it will not get out of position on the bail, thereby greatly facilitating the bottling of such liquid.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure l is a vertical sectional view of a portion of a bottle provided with a stopperconstructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective View, the parts of the stopper being separated,
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in both figures of the drawings.
ldesignates a wire bail provided with a straight transverse portion 2 and having the terminals 3 of its sides extended inward and adapted to be connected with a leverat of the ordinary construction, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings, and the said lever is designed to be fulcrumed on the neck 5 of a bottle or other receptacle by means of a wire neck-band 6, which is arranged beneath a shoulder of the neck, as shown. The bail 1 is provided at the center of its transverse portion 2 with a flattened portion 7, having vertical side faces when the stopper is on the neck of the bottle, as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings, and adapted to receive a clip 8, which is rigid with a solid body portion 9 of the stopper. The central flattened portion may be of any other polygonal shape, and it is adapted to prevent the clip which embraces it from swinging or moving in any direction independently'of the bail, whereby the stop per will be held in proper position during the operation of bottling liquids.
The clip 8, which is approximately U- shaped, is composed of sides and a connecting top portion, and the sides have their terminals 10 bent outward to form diverging or flaring arms, which are firmly embedded in the solid body portion of the stopper. The solid body portion 9 consists of a metal head having a flat upper face which is fitted against a disk or plate 11, and the said body portion has its lower part enlarged and extendedbeyond the upper portion or shank and adapted to receive and engage an elastic bottle-engaging portion or cap 12. The elastic portion or cap, which'may be of any desired construction, is preferably made of rubber and is adapted to be compressed on the neck of the bottle to seal the same. The head or solid body portion is preferably cast on the clip, which when the parts are assembled is placed in a suitable mold, and any soft metal, such as solder or an analogous composition or the like, may be used. The disk or plate 11 is provided with a central slot or opening 13, through which the sides of the clip are passed,
and the diverging sides or arms of the clip will support the plate in position and retain the clip on the bail until the head or body portion of the stopper is cast; but the head or body portion of the stopper may be applied to the clip in any other suitable manner.
The stopper is adapted to be drawn downward and compressed on the neck of the bottle or other receptacle by means of the lever, and the bottle or other receptacle is readily opened by throwing the lever upward.
- It will be seen that the stopper is exceedingly simple and inexpensive in construction, that it is adapted to be readily applied to a bail, and that it is firmly retained in proper position on the bail to prevent any independent movement of the stopper on the bail from interfering with the operation of filling and bottling. Also it will be clear that the divergent lower or outer portions of the sides of the clip support the plate and retain the parts in position while the head or body portion of the stopper is being cast and that the said divergent portions of the clip also facilitate the attachment of the head or body portion of the stopper to the clip and enable the former to obtain a firm hold on the latter.
What I claim is- 1. The combination of a bail having a polygonal portion, and a stopper provided with a fixed clip arranged on and engaging the polygonal portion of the bail, whereby the stopper is rigidly connected with the same and is held against movement independently of the said bail, substantially as described.
2. The combination of a bail, a stopper having an inner body portion and provided with an outer elastic portion, and a clip fixed to the inner body portion of the stopper and rigidly secured to the bail whereby the stopper is held against movement independently of the said bail, substantially as described.
3. The combination of a bail provided with a reduced polygonal portion, a clip arranged on the reduced polygonal portion of the bail and held against movement independently of the latter, and a stopper having a rigid inner portion fixed to the clip, substantially as described.
4:. The combination of a bail having a poly,,- onal portion, a stopper having a metallic inner body portion, and a clip rigidly secured to the bail and having its sides embedded in- Witnesses:
