SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 769,809, dated September 13, 1904.

Be it known that l, REGINALD VV SHBU N,

a citizen of the United States, residing at WVorcester, in the county of Worcester and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Wire Coat and'Hat Hooks, of which the following is a specification, accompanied by drawings, forming a part of the same, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved hook. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same, and Fig. 3 is an end view.

Similar reference-figures refer to similar parts in the different views.

1 denotes the screw-threaded end of a single piece of wire from which my improved hook is constructed by which the hook is fastened in position. The portion 2 of the wire extends straight out from the screw-threaded end 1 to any desired length and returns parallel with itself from the bend 3. The wires 2 and 4 are intertwisted at 5, and the portion 4 from the twist 5 toward the screw-threaded end 1 is directly beneath the portion 2. The bend 3 turns slightly upward in the usual manner, thus forming the upper or hat book. The part 4 bonds downward at 6 a short distance before it reaches the screw-threaded end 1. When the downwardly-extending por- 30 tion 7 reaches a suitable position below the screw-threaded end 1, it makes another bend at 8, so that the wire is approximately at right angles to the screw-threaded end 1. Theportion 7 forms a brace or support for the extended arm, and thereby strengthens the hook.

I render this bearing still more secure by deflecting the brace 7 slightly from the plane of the wire 2, as shown in Fig. 2, so that in the portion of the lower or coat hook at right angles to the upper or hat hook the wires 9 and 11 are parallel from the bend 8 to the bend 13 and in a plane parallel to the surface to which the hook may be attached.

My hook by the horizontal position of the wires 2 and 4 at the bend 3 affords a comparatively wide supporting-surface and by their vertical position between the twist 5 and the bend 6 offers an increased resistance to any downward strain. The twist 5 also by uniting at that point the wires 2 and 4 shortens the leverage of any force which would tend to separate the wires 2 and 4. The support to the wire 2 aiforded by the wire 4c is increased by extending the wire 4 toward the screw-threaded end 1 for some distance before making the bend 6. This increased extension also by shortening the brace 7 raises the bend 8 nearer to the wire 2, and thereby provides abearing for the book of two wires instead of one from the bend 8 to the bend 13, since by a slight deflection of the brace 7 the wires 9 and 11 lie in a plane parallel to that of the surface to which the hook be attached.

I am aware that hooks have heretofore been made of a single piece of wire with screwthreaded ends and with certain parts intertwisted and braced, and I do not claim,broadly, such a construction.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A coat and hat hook made from a single piece of wire, having a screw-threaded end, and an upper or hat hook formed from a doubled portion of the wire twisted together, said doubled wires being in a vertical plane between said twist and said screw-threaded end, a brace extending downward springing from the lower member of the upper or hat hook at an angle less than a right angle, said brace being continued approximately at right an gles to said upper or hat hook, doubled laterwhich it may be attached, substantially as deally toward said upper or hat hook and looped scribed.
