E. J. HALL.
Y 7 CABLE HANGER.
No. 391,605. Patented Oct. 28, 1888.

WITH TATES EDWARD J. HALL, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
CABLE=HANGER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 391,605, dated October 23, 1888.
Application tiled January 21, 1888.
To aZZ whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, EDWARD J. HALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Cable-Hangers, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to cable-hangers, and its object is to provide a cheap and reliable support between the cable proper and the suspending-wire.
As to the state of the art prior to rnyinvention, reference is made to Letters Patent No. 312,755, granted WVilliam R. Patterson February 24, 1885, for cablehanger.
The principal objection to the hanger de scribed in said patent is the expense of manufacturing and the multiplicity of parts.
By my invention I reduce the number of parts and cheapen and simplify the construction thereof, thus producing a hanger which is equal in strength and efficiency and less liable to be broken or impaired.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view illustrative of a cable supported upon the suspending-wire by means of the cable-hangers which I have invented. Fig. 2 is an enlarged elevation of one of the hangers secured to the cable. Fig. 3 is an end elevation thereof. Fig. 4 is a sectional view showing the manner of tying the two parts of the hanger together to clamp them upon the cable.
As shown more clearly in Fig. 2, it will be seen that my hangerconsists of two parts, the upper portion, a, being provided with a hook, and preferably provided with a perforation for the tie-wire. The lowerportion, Z), is preferably of the form shown, being preferably provided with a groove for the tie-wire.
It is especially desirable that a cablehanger should have a long bearing-surface upon the cable to be suspended and only a single point of bearing upon the suspending-wire. It is Serial No. 261,496. (No model.)
with this end in view that I have made the lower portion, 1), of the clamp of considerable length and secured the hook or upper portion thereto, so as to securely clamp the cable between them, so as to securely hold the cable, as shown. The book portion may be of malleable iron, the lower portion being preferably made of wood. Lead or other material not liable to cut into the lead of the cable might be used; but I prefer wood as the better and cheaper material.
Having thus described my invention,I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A cablehanger consisting of two parts, the upper portion thereof being provided with a hook and the lower portion thereof being of wood, the two parts being clasped to the cable and rigidly secured thereto, as described.
2. In a cable-hanger, the hooked metallic portion a, perforated, in combination with the lower portion, 1), said lower portion being longer than the upper portion and provided with a groove, and a tie-wire passing through the perforation of piece a and resting in the groove of piece 1), whereby the two parts are rigidly clamped to a cable, substantially as described.
3. A cable-hanger consisting in the combination of the upper hooked portion and the lower extended portion, the two portions being rigidly clamped about the cable and the hook passing over a suspending-wire,whereby a large bearing-surface is provided against the surface of the cable and a single point of bearing upon the suspending-wire, substantially as described.
4. A cable-hanger consisting of two parts, the upper portion thereof being provided with a hook and the lower portion thereof being of wood, the two parts being clasped to the ca ble and rigidly secured thereto by a tie-wire, as described.
In witness whereof I hereunto subscribe my name this 80th day of December, A. D. 1887.
EDWARD J. HALL.

EDWARD D. WILe-Us, H. O. PALMER.
