CABLE-SUSPENDING HANGER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 698,185, dated April 22, 1902. Application filed March 15,1902. Serial No. 98,446. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SILAS DU PEROW, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gable-suspending Hangers; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in cable-suspending hangers suitable for use more especiallyin suspending a cable or bunch of cables from another cable.
The object of this invention is to provide a hanger of the character indicated which is simple and durable in construction, possessive of great strength, readily applied, and reliable in its operation.
With this object in view my invention con sists in certain features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure Iis a side elevation illustrating a hanger embodying my invention and showing the hanger suspended from a supporting-cable and ready to be looked upon the cable or bunch of cables which are to be suspended from the supporting-cable. Fig. II is a bottom plan relative to Fig. I. Fig. III isa left-hand side elevation relative to Fig. I. Fig. IV is a side elevation corresponding with Fig. I, except that in Fig. IV the hanger is shown locked upon the cable or bunch of cables suspended thereby. Fig. V is a left-hand side elevation relative to Fig. IV.
Referring to the drawings, a designates a cable or bunch of cables which are suspended by hangers embodying my invention from a supporting-cable I).
My improved hanger consists in the main of a piece of sheet metal, which is bent into the shaperequired to form two hooks c and cl, arranged at the top and bottom, respectively, of the hanger. The upper hook c is formed by one end portion of the sheet-metal piece and a piece of wire e, and the said portion of the sheet-metal piece is bent around the said piece of wire, which is bent longitudinally to conform to the curvature or bend of the hook c. The piece of wire e forms the core of the hook c and adequately stiffens the said hook to render it especially suitable for the function thereby to be performed. The hook c is arranged mouth down, so as to render it capable of overhanging and straddling the supporting-cable b. The lower hook d forms a metal piece and is pliable and long enough to render it capable of being bent completely around, and thereby encircling the cable or cables a.
The central portion of the sheet-metal piece is shaped and bent to form an upright web f,
which joins the hooks cand altogether. The web is widest at its lower end(see Fig. III) and at'the said end extends laterally, as at 9, beyond one side of the upperhook c and laterally beyond the opposite side of the said hook, as at h.
The hook d at its free end (see Fig. II) is slotted centrally and longitudinally, as at j, so as to form two arms and m, which are long enough to render them capable of straddling opposite ends 9 and 'h, respectiv ly, of the aforesaid lower and Wider portion of the web f when the hook (1 upon the application of the hanger is bent around the cable or cables a, so as to completely encircle the said cable or cables, as shown in Figs. IV and V, and the said arms 70 and m when the hook d has thus been made to encircle the cable or cables at are bent over and closely against both sides of the said end portions of the wider portion of the web f, so as to avoid loosening of the clip or sleeve thus formed by the hook d.
Opposite end portions of the hook c are preferably parallel or approximately parallel, and the piece of wire or core e of the-said hook extends beyond the free end of the outer or sheet-metal portion of the said hook, as at e, and the said protruding end 6 of the said core is upon the application of the hanger to the supporting cable a bent inwardly toward the web f and in under the said cable, so as to prevent jumping or displacement of the hanger from the said cable.
WVhat I claim is- 1. A cable-suspending hanger comprising a piece of sheet metal which is bent into the shape required to form two hooks which are arranged at the top and bottom, respectively, of the hanger, and having the following: a lower hook (Z arranged mouth up and forming a bearing for the cable or cables to be suspended by the hanger and formed entirely by the sheet-metal piece and having the dimensions required to render it capable of being bent completely around and thereby encircling the said cable or cables, and an upper hook 0 arranged mouth down and formed by a core-forming piece of wire embraced by an end portion of the sheet-metal piece, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A cable-suspending hanger comprising a piece of sheet metal which is bent into the shape required to form two hooks which are arranged at the top and bottom, respectively, of the hanger, and having the following: a lower hook d arranged mouth up and forming a bearing for the cable or cables to be suspended by the hanger and formed entirely by the sheet-metal piece and having the dimensions required to render it capable of being bent completely around and thereby encircling the said cable or cables, and an upper hook 0 arranged mouth down and formed by a core-forming piece of wire embraced by an end portion of the sheet-metal piece and extending beyond the said end portion of the sheet-metal piece at the free end of the said upper hook, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. A cablesuspending hanger having the following: an upper hook 0 arranged mouth down, a lower hook 01 arranged mouth up and formed entirely by a sheet-metal piece which is pliable and long enough to render it capable of being completely bent around and thereby encircling the cable or cables to be suspended by the hanger, and a web fjoining the two hooks together and widest at its end which is contiguous to the lower hook and at the said end extending laterally beyond opposite sides of the upperhook, and the free end of the lower hook being slotted longitudinally from the free extremity of the said hook inwardly so as to form two arms which are long enough to render them capable of straddlin g opposite ends, respectively,of the aforesaid wider portion of the web when the said hook, upon the application of the hanger, is bent around and thereby caused to completely encircle the aforesaid cable or cables, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. A cable-suspending hanger having the following: an upper hook 0 arranged mouth down, a lower hook cl arranged mouth up and formed entirely by a sheet-metal piece which is pliable and long enough to render it capable of being completely bent around and scenes thereby encircling the cable or cables to be suspended by the hanger, and an upright web f joining the two hooks together and widest at its lower end and at the said end extending laterally beyond opposite sides of the up per hook, and the free end of the lower hook being slotted centrally and longitudinally from the free extremity of the said hook inwardly so as to form two arms which are long enough to render them capable of straddling opposite ends, respectively, of the aforesaid lower and wider portion of the web when the said hook, upon the application of the hanger, is bent around and thereby caused to completely encircle the aforesaid cable or cables, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
5. The combination, with a supporting-cable, and a cable or cables to be suspended from the supporting-cable, of a hanger comprising the following: an upper portion hung upon the supporting-cable and formed by a core-forming piece of wire embraced by one end portion of a sheet-metal piece, and having the piece of wire extending beyond the said sheet-metal portion at the free end of the said hook and there bent inwardly in under the supporting-cable, and a lower portion affording bearing to the suspended cable or cables and formed entirely by the aforesaid sheet-metal piece, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
6. The combination, with a supporting-ca ble, and a cable or cables to be suspended from the supporting-cable, of a hanger comprising the following: an upper portion hung upon the supporting-cable, a lower portion affording bearing to the suspended cable or cables and formed entirely by a sheet-metal piece, a web joining the upper and lower portions of the hanger together and widest at its lower end and at the said end extending laterally beyond opposite sides of the upper portion of the hanger, and the aforesaid lower portion of the hanger being slotted to form two arms which straddle opposite ends, respectively, of the aforesaid wider portion of the web, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
7. The combination, with a supporting-cable, and a cable or cables to be suspended from the supporting-cable, of a hanger comprising the following: an upper portion hung upon the supporting-cable, a lower portion affording bearing to the suspended cable or cables and formed entirely by a sheet-metal piece, an upright web joining the said upper and lower portions of the hanger together and widest at its lower end and at the said end extending laterally beyond opposite sides of the upper portion of the hanger, and the aforesaid lower portion of the hanger being slotted centrally and longitudinally to form two arms which straddle opposite ends, respectively, of the aforesaid lower and wider portion of the web and are bent over and closely against both sides of the web, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
