INVE N T0]? 4 TTOBNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE HENRY GROTH, OF SAVANNAH, GEORGIA, ASSIGNOR TO JOHN W. CHANDLER, OF SAME PLACE.
CU RTAlN-FIXTU RE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 548,192, dated October 22, 1895.
Application filed July 5, 1895- Serial No. 554,987- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE HENRY GRo'rH, a citizen of the United. States, and a resident of Savannah, county of Ohatham, and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Curtain-Fixtures, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention relates to curtain-fixtures, and the object thereof is to produce an improved device of this class, the construction of which involves the use of a pole or support in which is formed a longitudinal chamber, which extends throughout the length thereof, and in the lower side of which is a longitudinal slot, through which depends the clamps or other devices by which a curtain, portiere, or other article may be connected with the pole.
The invention also involves an improved form of clamp to be used for the purpose specified.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, and in which Figure l is an elevation of my improved curtain pole or support, showing also a curtain suspended therefrom; Fig. 2, a transverse section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3,2. side elevation of a section of the pole on a scale larger than that of Fig. 1; Fig. 4, a sectional detail View of said clamp; Fig. 5, a section on the line 5 5 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 6 a transverse section of a modified form of construction.
In the practice of my invention I employ a pole A, formed of any desired material, but preferably of wood and also preferably cylindrical in cross-section.
Formed in the lower part of the poleA and extending throughout the length thereof is a longitudinal chamber or cavity B, which is open on the lower side, and within this longitudinal chamber is placed a similarly-formed metal casing C, the lower side of which conforms to the outer surface of the pole and is provided with a longitudinal slot D.
From within the casing O or the longitudinal chamber formed thereby are suspended the clamps or clasps E, which consist of springmetal yokes provided with jaws F, connected by a central portion G, in which is formed an eye or loop H, by means of which the clamp or clasp is suspended through the slot D,said
The inner surfaces of the jaws F are provided with the usual teeth or serrations, and secured to one of the sides G, above the jaws F, or formed thereon, are jaws or projections H, which extend in the direction of the opposite side or arm of the clamp, and the ends of which .areinwardly directed, and connected with the opposite arm or side are jaws or clamps K, similar in form, having inwardlydirected shoulders and projecting ends L.
In securing a curtain, portiere, or other arti- 7o ole to the clamp the end thereof is inserted between the jaws Fin the usual manner, and said jaws and their arms are pressed together until the shoulders or projections of the spring-arms K are clasped within and held by the arms H, as shown in Fig. 4, in which position the curtain, portiere, or other article will be securely held until said clamps or arms are released, as will be readily understood.
In Fig. 6 I have shown a modified form of 8c pole, which is preferably fiat on the front side and circular on the other, and formed within the upper front portion thereofis a longitudinal cavity or recess M, and connected with the front side of the pole is a plate N, which extends upward and partially incloses said longitudinal cavity or recess.
The clamps or hooks employed in this construction are substantially the same as hereinbefore described, with the exception that the eye or loop H is formed into a hook, by means of which the clamp or clasp is suspended from the upper edge of the plate N, as clearly shown, and it will also be observed that in this construction/the clamps or hooks 5 are adjustable on their support, as in the construction shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3.
It is evident that changes in and modifications of the construction shown and described may be made without departing fromthe spirit we of my invention, and I therefore reserve the right to make such alterations therein as fairly come within the scope thereof.
Having fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination with a curtain pole, provided withalongitudinal chamber in the bottom thereof, the lower side of which is open and a metal casing secured therein provided with a slot in its lower side, of a clamp or clasp consisting of serrated jaws united by a central portion in which is formed a loop or eye adapted to be inserted in the chamber formed by said metal casing, and by means of which the clamp or clasp is suspended through said slot, the separate sides of said clamp or clasps being provided, one with projecting hooks and the other with projecting spring arms, provided with transverse steps or shoulders adapted to be held by the said projecting hooks, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination with a curtain pole, or support of a clamp or clasp suspended therefrom and adjustable on its support consisting of clamping jaws united bya central portion the end of which is adapted to be connected with the pole or support and the separate sides of the clamp or clasp being provided, one with projecting hooks and the other with projecting spring arms, provided with transverse steps or shoulders adapted to be held by the said projecting hooks, substantially as shown and described.
3. A clamp or clasp for suspending a curtain, portiere, or other article from a pole or support and adapted to be connected therewith, said clamp or clasp consisting of clamping jaws united by a central portion by means of which the clamp or clasp is adapted to be connected with the pole or support, the separate sides of said clamp or clasp being provided, one with projecting hooks and the other with projecting spring arms provided with transverse steps or shoulders adapted to be held by said projecting hooks, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presj ence of two witnesses, this 24th day of June, 1895.
GEORGE HENRY GROTII. Witnesses:
M. R. CHANDLER, M. A. CHANDLER.
