CLASP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 20, 1906.
Application filed November 10, 1904. Serial No. 232.240.
To @ZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK R. ELBERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fostoria, in the county of Seneca and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Olasps, of which the following is a specification. y
My invention has relation to improvements in clasps for useI in securing clothing, stockings, and other` articles in position; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will behereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved clasp. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the clasp as viewed in a direction opposite to that of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the clasp composed, preferably, from a single piece or blank of spring sheet metal folded adjacent its longitudinal center to produce a central transversely-disposed loop or eye 2 and a pair of opposed gripping- jaws 3 and 4, one of which terminates at its outer end in an inturned engaging portion or flange 5 and the other in a recessed engaging portion 6, having a groove or seat 7 for the. reception of the flange 5, attention being directed to the fact that the clamping members or jaws 3 4 normally diverge outwardly from the eye 2 and are slotted longitudinally, as at 8 and, further, the jaws receive their spring action by means of said eye. Disposed within the slots 8 and extending between the jaws is an adjustable bolt 9, having at one end a head 10, provided with a washer 10 therewith, designed to bear upon the outer face of one of the jaws and on opposite sides of one of the slots, and
a thumb-screw l 1 applied on the other end of the bolt, having awasher 1 1 therewith, serves to bear'upon the outer face of the other jaw and also on the opposite sides of the other' slot, said washers serving to adjust the bolt, and said washers and thumb-nut also permitting the jaws to be brought together and held in an adjustable position. In the eye 2 there is arranged an attaching member or clip 12, formed, preferably, from a single length of wire bent into shape and having a strap-receiving opening or loop 18 for the rer ception of a suitable means 14 and an eye 15 for the reception of an analogous attaching device.
To operate the clasp, the jaws 3 and 4 may be opened to the appropriate extent for the reception of the article by movin the adjusting member 9 longitudinally of the slots 8, and after such adjustment the mem- In testimony whereof I affix my signature 7 5 in presence of two 'witnesses FRANK R. ELBERT.
