PATENT FFIcE.
THOMAS F. DWYER, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
PIPE-HANGER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 603,180, dated April 26, 1898.
Application filed May 26, 1897. $erial No. 638,279. (No model.)
To aZZ whomit may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS F. DWYER, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Hangers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in pipe-brackets; and the object of the same is to provide an improved bracket forv supporting the drop-pipe of gas-fixtures; and it consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter particularly set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention, and Fig. 2 is a detached view of the clamp. Fig. 3 is a View of the clamp in open position.
Referring to the numerals on the drawings, 1 indicates a tubular rod having one end flattened and bent at right angles thereto, as illustrated at 2.
3 indicates a rod which is adapted to move within the tubular rod and has its opposite end flattened and bent at right angles, as illustrated at 4. These flattened ends are provided with perforations through which nails or screws are adapted to be inserted for securing the same to the beams of a building between the ceiling and the floor, said rod adapted to extend between the two beams, and by reason of one section of the rod sliding within the other the same is adjustable according to the distance between the beams. The clamp consists of two members, each member provided with the portions 6 and 7, which extend at right angles to each other, and formed in these portions are the semicircular cavities 8 and 9, which are serrated and form, when the two members are put together, the two passages extending at right angles to each other. The two members are positioned upon the tubular rod 1 and secured thereon by the set-screw 9, which passes therethrough, said tubular rod being inserted through the perforation 8, and by means of the serrations of said perforation or passage the clamp is prevented from slipping. One of the clamping members carries at its opposite end a strip or plate 10, which is secured thereto and extends to the oppo site member and has its end turned at right angles, asillustrated at 11, so that when the set-screw has been adjusted for securing the clamp to the tubular rod it is impossible to separate the two members at their opposite 'ends'on account of said strip or plate. Said members cannot be separated until the setscrew is loosened to permit the same to be disengaged from the end of said strip. The drop-pipe is adapted to extend through the passage 9, formed by the clamping members, and be firmly held thereby. The gas-fixtures are secured to this drop-pipe, as will be understood.
From the above description it will be seen that I have produced an improved bracket which maybe adjusted to suit beams which are situated various distances apart and securely holds the'drop-pipe to which the gasfixtures are secured.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'
1. The combination of an extensible rod adapted to be inserted between two adjacent beams, a clamp comprising two members, said members when secured together forming serrated passages between them through which the rod is adapted to extend, the opposite end of the clamping members forming a passage between them which extends at right angles to the first-named passage and in which the drop-pipe is adapted to be secured, and means for securing said members together, substantially as described.
2. The combination of an extensible rod adapted to be secured between two adjacent beams,a clamp comprising two members forming between them a passage when united, through which passage the rod is adapted to extend, said clamping members also forming at their opposite end a passage extending at right angles to the first-named passage for receiving and supporting the drop-pipe, a strip or plate secured to one of said clamp ing members and extending across the oppo- In testimony whereof I have signed this site member and having its extremity turned specification in the presence of two subscribat right angles for the purpose of preventing ing Witnesses.
the separation of said clamping members THOMAS F. DWYER. [L. 8.] when united, and means for securing the itnessesz clamping members together and in position MARTIN F. CONROY,
upon the rod, substantially as described. OSCAR H. OACOIOLA.
