Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 12, 1907'.
Application iiied January 15, 1906. Serial Nc. 296.039.
To f7/Z when?, llt 7'17/(1/7/ concern:
Be it known that I, ADNAH McMUn'rRrE, of New York, N. Y., have invented certain Tmprovements in Pipe-Hangers, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings designating like parts.
This invention relates to hangers for supporting pipes and the like, and has for its object a device which will enable connection by adjustable means with the flange of an beam or similar structural member, the device having also means to enable the support of the pipes at any desired angle and at any desired distance from the beam or other building member.
lith forms of hangers at present in use it has been difficult to secure the pipes in proper position relatively to each other and to the plaster; but by my improvement the clamp for the hanger may be put in place and plaster thereafter put on the ceiling and the rack or racks placed upon the hanger-shank in adjusted position according to the thickness of the plaster and without disturbing the plaster. By the provision of other members to be described hereinafter the hanger and part of the conduit may be placed in position, and
thereafter other conduit may be installedan order of installation which has been diflicult with the forms of hangers at present in use. The various features by which l provide for such installation of the pipes will be illustrated and set forth fully in the accompanying drawings and specification, and pointed out in the claims.
ln the drawings, Figure 1 shows an T-beam with a hanger embodying my improvements shown in place; and E ig. 2 is a view in plan of a portion of the hanger shown separately, with conduit in place at different angles.
In the embodiment of my invention selected for illustration and description as a convenient form to enable a ready and complete understanding of my improvements the part designated by the reference-numeral l. is an adjustable clamp member with which cooperates a similar member 2, each having near one end a hook or similar portion 3 to grasp the edges of the T-beam el or its equivalent, the members being each. slotted at 5 longitudinally to receive a bolt 6 with a head 7 and threaded at 8 to receive a lock-nut 9, by
l which the parts of the hanger may be secured l in adjusted relation. i The pipe-rack 10 is placed upon the exl tended shank 11 of the bolt which passes l through a hole 12 in the central portion of l the rack, on each side of which are pipe positioning and retaining fingers 13. There may be as many of these pipe-seats 14 between l, the 'lingers as desired, and additional rack l members 15 may be provided upon the eX- l tension of the shank. It will readily be seen l that the clamp may be attached to the beam L or other building member and secured in adj justed position, and thereafter the plaster for l the ceiling, &c., 18 may be put in place. The rack 10 will then be put on and a lock-nut 16 placed upon the shank to hold in place the rack 10 after the pipes 17 shall have been installed. Then other pipes, as 19, on the additional rack member 15 may be installed at such an angle, &c., as conditions may make desirable. Lock-nuts 20 can be used to se cure the additional rack member in adjusted position. The 'lingers 13, extending as they do above the web or central portion of the rack member, form a seat in which the locknut can be turned even when the rack member is run up against the ceiling, as the fingers will contact with the ceiling and keep the lock-nut out of contact with it. The curved lower portions of the pipe-seats form a similar seat for a lock-nut below the central web.
Se far as T am aware I am the first to provide a hanger device presenting the capabilities embodied in the construction herein illustrated and described, and accordingly T do j not limit myself to any specific material or constructional details, nor in general otheri wise than as set forth in the claims read in connection with the foregoing specification. l Vhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letn j ters Patent, is-
1.v A pipe-rack for devices of the class described comprising a web having a central aperture and a plurality of fingers extending above said web and curved to form pipe-seats on each side of said web said fingers being of i sufficient height to reach above the pipe when l in place, substantially in the manner and for l the purpose set forth.
2. A hanger or rack for pipes or the like comprising a supporting member and a rack l member having a web having a central aper- TOO ture and a plurality of 'lingers extending l said 'lingers and having their curved bottom above said web and curved to form a plurall portions below the plane of said web to form ity of pipe-seats, one or more on each side of l a seat for another lock-nut, substantially asV said web said Fingers forming with said web a l described. 5 seat for a lockenut substantially as described. I Signed at New York, in the county of New 3. Apipe-hanger comprising a supporting l York and State of New York, this 27th day member, and a rack member having` a cenof December, A. D. 1905:
tral web with a central aperture to receive ADNAH MGMURTRIE. Said supporting member, iingers extended Witnesses: 10 above the plane of .said web to form a socket l ALEXANDER C. PROUDFIT,
for a lock-nut, and curved pipe-seats outside l WM, H. MoCoRMroK.
