Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 1L5, 119M196 Application filed June 11, 1909. Serial No. 501,538.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE G. FISHER, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The primary object of this invention is to provide an improved clip or pin paperfastener which Wlll be composed of but few parts and will be so protected as not to be liable to accidentally take up papers other than those to which the device is secured.
The invention will be hereinafter fully set forth and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view showing the fastener secured to a package of papers. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the chp or pin fastener. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the protector plate. Fig. 4 is a section on line 44, Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a clip or pin fastener. It is shown as composed of a body portion 2 of narrow metal,
and two end portions 3 which are capable of being readily bent at right angles to the body so as to pass through openings in the bundle of papers. The body portion is preferably crimped longitudinally 'at 4, to increase'the strength thereof, but the same results may be secured by crimping or bending over the edges of the metal.
5 is a shield or protector for the ends'of the clip or paper fastener. It is shown in the form of a plate having its end portions 6 deflected from the main portion but extended parallel therewith. In the angular portionsbetween the main and end portions of the plate are openings 7 which are designed to receive the ends of the clip or pin fastener which are passed inwardly beneath the main portion of the protector.
The length of the latter is about equal to the body portion 2 of the clip. In practice, the end portions of the clip or pin fastener are projected through open ings in the papers, and on' the side of the latter normally forming the to is placed the protector 5. The ends of t e clip are bent down over the end ortions of the protector and carried inwardly toward each other, and bein projected through the openmgs 7 such en s are concealed, and all danger of apers accidentally adhering thereto is avoi ed. When it is desired to open the fastener, for the purpose of adding or removing papers, the operator grasps the main portion of protector 5 and lifts the latter away from the pile. This draws outwardly the ends of the clip, which may be then bent into parallel lines so as to withdraw or apply a paper. The protector ma be readily secured in position by again ben ing the ends of the clip and causing them to project through the openings in the protector.
By means of my invention a considerable saving of metal is accomplished; the cost of manufacture is reduced; the fastener as a whole is rendered perfectly secure; and all danger of its engaging or takin up other papers is avoided.
I c aim as my invention 1. A paper fastener comprising a clip having a non-flexible body portion and two flexible end portions, a protector of length approximately equal to the body portion of the clip, said protector having angular portions ormed with openings, said end portions of the clip being bent inwardly toward each other and projected through said openings, their extreme ends being beneath the protector.
' 2! A paper fastener comprising a clip or pin fastener having a non-flexible body por tion and twoflexible end portions, a protector comprising a plate of length approxipin fastener having a crimped body portion specification in the presence of two subscribund flexible end portions, and a protector mg witnesses.
having angular ortions formed with openings to receive t 1e flexible ends of the ch11), CLARENCE FISHER 5 which ends are bent inwardly toward eac Witnesses:
other beneath the protector. FRANCIS S. MAGUIRE,
In testimony whereof, I have signed this JOHN A. MURPHY.
