TRUSS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 503,223, dated August 15, 1893.
Application filed January 19, 1893. Serial No. 458,925. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ANDREW YOST, of Steelton, county of Dauphin, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trusses, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to theaccompanying drawings.
The object of my invention is to produce an improved truss which will give greater comfort to the wearer and greater ease of movement Without danger. of displacement than may be had with those in ordinary use.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front View of my truss; Fig. 2 a top plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a view of one of the springs, detached; and Fig. 4 a similar view of a modified form thereof.
Referring to the figures on the drawings, 1 indicates a belt of suitable flexible material,
as for example leather. It is provided with loops 2 on one or both sides, depending upon whether the truss is to be used for single or double hernia.
3 indicates eyelets in one end of the strap. 4 indicates a bent spring having in one end a ring which enters one of the loops 2, and
9 indicates a catch upon the end of the spring which is inserted into one of the eyelets 3, and is adapted, when the strap encircles the waist, to hold the truss securely in place. The spring is preferably secured to the strap altogether by the loops 2. If the strap is made of very light leather it is preferably provided with stiffening plates 10 at intervals-to prevent the leather from biting into the flesh of the wearer.
The spring may be made of round wire, as illustrated in Fig. 3, or of flat spring metal, as illustrated in Fig. 4.
In applying my truss the spring or springs, as the case may be, are set in place, the rings in their ends serving to afiord a broad firm bearing for them. The slotted end of the spring is then brought opposite the hernia and the pad is properly adj usted. The spring is then fastened in place. 7 By the use of my strap a great freedom of movement is permitted and danger of displacement avoided.
What I claim is- In a truss the combination with a belt provided with loops, of a superimposed spring provided at one end with a ring adapted to be passed through one of the loops and at the other with a slot, and a pad adjustably secured within the slot, substantially as specifled.
