1 3e it known that I, JAMES A. RECTOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lancaster, in the county of Schuyler and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Truss, ofy which the following is a specification.

Myinvention relates to an improvement in trusses; and it has for its object to provide a truss of simple construction, that will readily adapt itself to the various motions of the body and at the same vtime retain the pad easily and firmly in its position over the rupture; also, providing a pad that can be used on either or both sides by using an extra pad on the same belt; and the truss consists of a hard pad att-ached to an end of an angle spring secured diametrically to said pad, in combination with novel construction of attachments and arrangement of supports, together with further details of construction, hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a truss constructed in accordance with my invention with all parts in position as applied to the body. Fig. 2 is a detail in perspective of the pad and spring detached from the support. Fig. 3 is a section taken longitudinally of the spring and pad. Fig. 4. is a detail of the hook-blank.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, A represents a body-band of vsuitable nonelastic material, provided on both ends with buckles d, having suitable slots for engaging with the attaching devices of the truss-pad. A crotch-strap B is attached to a buckle inl the rear of the body-band A, and is itself provided with a pad-attaching loop b to more firmly secure the pad to the body and prevent derangement.

The pad of my truss is peculiarly arranged with particular reference to its intent and attachment.

Crepresentsastrip of spring metal doubled upon itself in an approximate V shape. Upon one end` which is the inner, considering the way in which the spring is attached, a suitable pad D is firmly secured. Any hard pad suitable for the purpose may be attached to this spring. From its pad-attaching point spring O extends upwardly above the top end Vof the pad, then bends outwardly upon itself, as said, and extends at an angle back to about the center of the pad again, thus forming a V-shaped spring diametrically secured with reference to the supporting-band. Between the pad and spring is secured a strip of gum-cloth E, which extends above the pad beneath the spring to a slight distance bcyond the bend of said spring, obviating by the use thereof any irritable friction between the body and said spring, and otherwise protecting the body therefrom.

To the free wing of spring C on its outer face is centrally pivoted a blank of metal F,

provided with lateral tongues doubled upon themselves to form hooks f, to which the buckles a on the end of body-band A are attached and serve to support the pad in place. Being pivoted, the blank F gives freely to all movements of the body without changing the pad or spring from their relative positions to the body. On the free end of said spring O a supplemental spring G is riveted, which passes up between the hooks f and normally closes the space between said hooks, thus serving the function of a keeper, preventing the buckles a when sprung into hooks ffrom becoming disengaged, and thus rendering thc attachment sure and certain. Supplemental spring Gis provided at its lower end with a small hook g, to which the loop b on the end4 of the crotch-strap B is hooked, firmly holding the pad to its place and giving as much tension to the spring as desired, which may be regulated at the option of the wearer by tightening orloosening said crotchstrap;

As before stated, in case of double hernia two pads may be secured to the same supporting-band by attaching two crotch-straps to the rear of the body-band and passing around to the end of the pad-spring, while the pads may be kept from lateral displacement by connecting the free ends of the pivoted hook-blanks by means of a suit-able strap.

In a truss, a body-band provided with a crotch-strap, an inverted-V-shaped spring, a pad secured to said spring, a hook on the free ICO sp ring provided with a hook proj eating below the end of said spring and extending upwardly between thehooksof said hook-blank, acting as :t keeper for the attaching-buckles, and an elastic backing', substantially :ts set forth.
