SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 364,590, dated June '7, 1887. Application filed August 3, 1885. Renewed February 28, 1887. Serial No.2"29,2-23.- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JONATHAN G.H0LLAN1), a citizen of the United States, residing at Glens Falls, in the county of Warren and State of New York, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Trusses, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to abdominal supporters, and has for its object the provision of an abdominal supporter provided witha truss attachment, whereby it may be used either to simply support the abdomen or, in cases of hernia of the abdomen, as a truss to support and keep the intestines within their ruptured casing.
To this end the invention consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, substantially as hereinafter described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, in which similar letters of reference denote similar parts, Figure 1 is a view showing the truss in position upon the Fig. 2 is an elevation of the outer surface of the combined supporter and truss, the supporting straps detached therefrom. Fig.- 3 is 'a similar View of the opposite side of the combined supporter and truss. Fig. 4 is a detached detail view of one of the movable truss-pads. Fig. 5 is a diametrical section on the line of the pad shown in Fig. 4,a nd its supporting shaft or bar. Fig. 6 represents a front view of an oval or elliptical'shaped pad.
Referring to the drawings, A designates an abdominal or supporting plate, of metal or other suitable material,provided with rounded ends a, as shown. The plate A is perfectly curved from end to end, from top to bottom, to conform to the person of the wearer. The entire plate, together with the pads, are covered with suitable material to prevent said parts from being corroded or otherwise in- 13 Bdesignate rods of metal that extend from end to end of the plate A, near the tops and bottoms of the openings or cutaway portions A, to afford guides and bearings for a pair of slotted pad-supporting plates, 0 0, one of each of which is placed and has lateral movement within each of the openings A. spectively. Each of said plates 0 G is pro-' hollow screwthreaded studs 6, fixed at one end to the center of disk E, and projecting thence through the slots 0 0 v The studs 6 are held securely attached to the plates 0 G by nuts f, placed upon said studs between the disks E and plates 0 O, and by thumb-nuts F, placed upon said studs e upon the opposite side of and bearing against the plates 0 C. By this described construction it will be seen that the disks E may be placed and securely held at differentdistances from the plates 0 G.
The middle portions of the disks E E are recessed at E to permit the outer surfaces of the pads G G to remain flush with the surface of the projecting portions E of the disks E when the device is used as an abdominal supporter, at which time the surfaces of said parts E are flush with the inner surface of the plate 'A. The pads GG are each mounted upon a screw-threaded shank or stud, that moves freely back andforth in the hollow studs 6, and are held in fixed position by jam-nuts it, placed over the studs g-within and against the inner surfaces of the disks E, and thumbnuts it, placed over said studs and bearing against the ends of the studs 6.
It will be understood that the pads may be held at different distances from the surface of the disks E by the studs g and nuts h h. It will also be readily understood that the disks E and pads G G may be set and secured at any point in the slot 0 of the plates 0 C; also, that one of the disks E and pads G G may be projected at the same time, each being adjusted independently of the other.
The combined supporter and truss above described is secured to the person of the wearer in the following-described manner, to wit: jj designate buckles secured to the outer surface of the plate A at the upper edge, near the ends thereof.
J designates a strap connected to said buckles and passing thence over and about the hips of the wearer, and preferably connected to a shoulder-brace. (Not shown herein.)
k 7.1 designate buckles secured to the plate at each end thereof, to which is secured a beltor strap, K, that passes around the body below the hips, as shown.
Z Z designate loops secured to the face of the plate, ncarthe lower edge thereof. LL designate straps connected at one end to the loops Z and at their opposite ends to straps L, that pass about the leg.
By the above-described system of straps it will be seen that the device may be secured at the different desired points of the abdomen. In Fig. 6 I have shown an oval-shaped disk and pad. This form is, however, not new, it being in general use in articles of the class now upon the market.
The operation of my improvement will be readily understood without further description.
Modifications in details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the advantages of my invention.
I claim- 1. In a combined truss and support, the
I combination of the abdominal or supporting plate with adjustable pad supporting plates and hernia-pads, the pads being adjustable independently of the padsupporting plates, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a combined abdominal supporter and truss, a plate having cut-away portions or apertures near each of its ends, and slotted plates placed and movinglaterall y in said openings, in combination with truss-pads having movement in said plates in a vertical plane, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. 3. In a combined abdominal supporter and truss, a plate having securing-straps, apertures formed near its ends, and slotted plates placed and moving laterally upon guide-rods in said apertures, in combination with securing-rods secured at one end to said slotted plates, and a thumb-screw and clamp in the apertured plate, whereby to hold the slotted plates at different desired points in the apertures wherein they are placed, substantially as described.
- 4. In a combined abdominal supporter and truss, an apertured plate having strap-securing buckles attached thereto, rods to support and hold slotted plates in each of its apertures, and thumb-screw and clamp to secure said slotted plates at different points in said apertures, in combination with the slotted plates, their ad justing-rods, and truss-pads adapted to be moved nearer to or farther from said slotted plates, and to be secured at different points between the bottoms and tops thereof, substantially as described.
4 5. In a combined abdominal supporter and truss, disks E, having recessed portions E and hollow screw-threaded supporting-studs e, and securing-nutsf F, in combination with slotted plates 0 O and adjustable truss-pads G G, substantially as described.
6. In a combined abdominal supporter and truss, the truss-pads G G, having screwthreaded stud H and nuts h h, in combination with disks E, having hollow screw-threaded studs 6 and securing-nuts, slotted plates G C, guide-rods B B, and plate A, having securingstraps, substantially as described.
